Here Comes the Bride?

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

July 28, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. So to keep this short since I am tired and hungry going to say that everything worked for me except I thought that someone should have explained Khai’s autism to Esme a lot better than they did. I also thought the harebrained scheme his brother cooked up was ridiculous and was honestly one of the things that took me right out of the book. I did think that Hoang still does a great job with love scenes and sexual tension. I loved our quick […]

An excellent follow-up to a successful debut

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

July 17, 2019 by Malin 1 Comment

From Goodreads: Khai Diep has no feelings. Well, he feels irritation when people move his things or contentment when ledgers balance down to the penny, but not big, important emotions—like grief. And love. He thinks he’s defective. His family knows better—that his autism means he just processes emotions differently. When he steadfastly avoids relationships, his mother takes matters into her own hands and returns to Vietnam to find him the perfect bride. As a mixed-race girl living in the slums of Ho Chi Minh City, […]

“Please, don’t let me make you cry,” he whispered in her ear. “If something is wrong, tell me so I can fix it. Please.”

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

Earlier this year I read and fell hard for Helen Hoang’ debut The Kiss Quotient. I was taken with her non-traditional protagonists and immediately added her next book, The Bride Test, to my library request list. I’m glad that I did, I enjoyed this sophomore outing more than its predecessor. The Bride Test expands the world Hoang created in The Kiss Quotient. Khai Diep is one of Michael’s cousins we met in The Kiss Quotient (his brother Quan also features and will be the focus […]

A delightful read for at home by yourself

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

May 15, 2019 by lowercasesee 7 Comments

This book has been much reviewed here over at CBR and I probably won’t be adding much except: don’t read this at work. This book does not fade to black and you will feel weird about it. This is a book for reading at home while your partner is out of town and you are curled up on the couch with a glass of wine. That is the perfect scenario for The Kiss Quotient. The plot boils down to – Stella is 30 years old, professional […]

A different voice in romance

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

April 21, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

Stella Lane is mathematically brilliant but due to her diagnosis of Asperger’s has difficulty navigating social situations. This means that at the age of 30 she is facing increasing pressure from her parents to settle down and provide grandkids but has no prospects for a mate- and she has had such bad experiences in the past that she finds the idea of sex distasteful. A cutting remark from a coworker leads Stella to believe that maybe the problem with sex is Stella herself. She decides […]

“All the things that make you different make you perfect.”

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

March 26, 2019 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

The Kiss Quotient has been hanging out in my TBR since Malin’s review last July and I was excited to read it this year fulfilling tasks for both Read Harder Challenge and the Reading Women Challenge. I’m glad I read it in the early part of the year and didn’t put it off any longer, it was a quick fun read and while it wasn’t perfectly executed it was certainly better than average and quite good indeed for a debut. I have a soft spot […]
