I did a lot of Googling in this one

Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn

February 23, 2021 by Manimama 3 Comments

Love Lettering, by Kate Clayborn, is a love story. Not just of the protagonists, Meg and Reid, but a love story between a woman and New York City, Meg and her best friend Sibby. Meg is an artist. I’m not sure exactly what to call her- calligrapher? Graphic artist? I’ve read the entire book and I am still not sure- but she is high in demand within New York City to hand-write out rich people’s planners. These jobs allow her to live in New York […]

I (mostly) liked this series

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

Queen Song by Victoria Aveyard

Steel Scars by Victoria Aveyard

The Red Queen series is great for young adult readers who are maybe not quite grown enough for Game of Thrones but love a fantasy adventure involving royal intrigue and superpowers. The first in this series is Red Queen. Mare Barrow is a teenage pickpocket, stealing in the marketplace of her town to help support her family. They are ‘Reds’, an oppressed class of citizens ruled by ‘Silvers’. The designations are due to the colors of the group’s blood. Reds have red blood and work as a […]

I’ve run out of adjectives

Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi

February 11, 2021 by Manimama 1 Comment

I don’t know if I have enough words to describe the way I love Yaa Gyasi’s writing. I have given copies of her first book,  Homegoing, to every reader that I know. Her second book, Transcendent Kingdom, is at first glance very different but deals with many similar themes. Transcendent Kingdom is told by Gifty, a neuroscientist researching addictive behavior in mice. She’s brilliant, a dedicated scientist at a world class institution, but also a loner who wants human connection but pushes it away at every […]

Like the show? Try the book!

The Duke and I by Julia Quinn

The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn

An Offer From A Gentleman by Julia Quinn

Sweet Filthy Boy by Christina Lauren

February 11, 2021 by Manimama Leave a Comment

I started the Bridgerton series after watching the eponymous show. I have a bookmark that I love that reads, “Never judge a book by its movie”. I actually preferred the show to the first book in the series. The Duke and I is the basis for the Netflix show, and the plot is essentially the same. Daphne Bridgerton, fourth child and first daughter of the Bridgerton family, is in search of a husband. Simon, the duke of the title, is in search of a way […]

Gripping and detailed

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

February 11, 2021 by Manimama 1 Comment

I had somehow read all around this book but never actually read it through cover to cover. I have an interest in true crime but also a very low tolerance for being scared so I mostly limit myself to podcasts and the occasional book. In Cold Blood was one of the recommended books on my library app, and as it is recognized as the book that began the genre I thought it was worth the insomnia. In Cold Blood is an exhaustively documented chronicle of the […]

Why do I keep doing this to myself?

The One by Kiera Cass

January 12, 2021 by Manimama Leave a Comment

I’m sure that many of you have the same habit- once you’ve started reading something you have to finish it. Including a series- if I’ve plugged through a whole book in the series, I’m going to continue to read the rest. Very rarely do I give up, even when I spend more time rolling my eyes than looking at the page. Which is how I find myself writing a review of the third book in this series. The series follows ‘the Selection’, which is when […]
