This was fine.

Love at First by Kate Clayborn

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 20/30 Will I be able to meet 250 words on this review with this level of enthusiasm? “This was fine” is not exactly a statement full of strong emotion or opinions, which is where most of my review-writing mojo comes from. I guess we’ll see! (I’ve already used up fifty-six words and counting . . . now it’s sixty-two, sixty-three. . . okay, I’ll stop.) Then again, my efforts to talk about basically anything but the actual […]

Another hate-to-love Romance

Love at First by Kate Clayborn

December 13, 2021 by Sophia 14 Comments

I can count on my friend for good book recommendations, so when she told me that she’d really enjoyed Love at First (2021) by Kate Clayborn, I did not hesitate. We both read many different kinds of books, but we often pass along our romance recommendations. I had high hopes for this book. This book takes place in Chicago. Dr. Will Sterling has just inherited a unit from his estranged uncle in a six-unit building filled with very eccentric, close-knit owners. Conditions of the will prohibit Will […]

One of many literature romance novels I will read this year

Love at First by Kate Clayborn

April 26, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

So this is obviously a Romeo and Juliet re-telling, except as it were the real R&J couple are Will (Romeo’s) parents. That’s not a spoiler–I don’t mean it in the “they were foes and died tragically in a murder/suicide,” because it’s more the sentiment, like the outlines of their romance. The very first review of this book perfectly captured something I also wished–that Will and Nora had actually met in the first part of the book, such that their/Will’s instant connection was based on more than a […]

A gorgeous exploration of family, grief and love

Love at First by Kate Clayborn

April 11, 2021 by llamareadsbooks 3 Comments

Kate Clayborn’s spectacular Love Lettering was the first book I read in 2020. Now, while the rest of the year didn’t work out so well, I can’t deny that it was an amazing reading year for me, and now Love at First looks like it’s continuing that tradition. I am an absolute sucker for a found family story, and this is an expert exploration of that trope and its power. It’s also got a bit of a Romeo & Juliet feel, and since that’s literally […]

I did a lot of Googling in this one

Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn

February 23, 2021 by Manimama 3 Comments

Love Lettering, by Kate Clayborn, is a love story. Not just of the protagonists, Meg and Reid, but a love story between a woman and New York City, Meg and her best friend Sibby. Meg is an artist. I’m not sure exactly what to call her- calligrapher? Graphic artist? I’ve read the entire book and I am still not sure- but she is high in demand within New York City to hand-write out rich people’s planners. These jobs allow her to live in New York […]

The found family narrative works better than the romance

Love at First by Kate Clayborn

February 23, 2021 by Malin 1 Comment

3.5 stars Disclaimer! I got this book as an ARC from NetGalley. That has in no way influenced my review. Sixteen years ago, Will Stirling first cast eyes on Nora Clarke and was instantly smitten. He was standing under a shaded tree, listening with a sinking heart to his mother pleading with the uncle he hadn’t even realised existed, while she was up high on a balcony, throwing little tomatoes at thieving squirrels. Cut to the present day, when Will is an overworked doctor and has […]
