“After more than a year here, I feel like I’ve seen what I needed to see.”

Burma Chronicles by Guy Delisle

January 3, 2025 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

This was a reread, as I’ve been doing a lot this week (going through bookshelves in your childhood home will do that to you). I enjoyed it and will keep it for the collection. I’ve read several of Guy Delisle’s travelogues and always like his point of view on things and the way he portrays his travels. I may not always agree with his conclusions or philosophy, but his clean linework and the way he interacts with the world make these volumes satisfying and thought […]

All over the place seems to be the theme

World Record Holders by Guy Delisle

February 13, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport new author World Record Holders is an artistic story that can feel abstract. And that’s pretty much all I have to say about Guy Delisle’s story. But I cannot go all Forest Gump and end on that note, therefore, I will add a couple technical things to my review.  Helge Dascher and Rob Aspinall are the translators.  And Delisle is both author and illustrator. Gripping story of resilience

Hostage by Guy Delisle

January 30, 2023 by ElCicco 1 Comment

CBR15Passport books from different countries Hostage is the true story of Christophe Andre, a Frenchman working for Doctors Without Borders in Chechnya who was kidnapped and held for three months. Guy Delisle, a French illustrator and writer, interviewed Andre after his ordeal and turned the taped interviews into a gripping work of graphic biography.  In order to place things in context I had to read up a bit on the Chechen/Russian war of 1994-96. The events in this story take place after that conflict had […]

Why I shouldn’t review books about the city I grew up in

January 23, 2018 by Professor FluffyKitten 2 Comments

This was a hard review to write Jerusalem, is a graphic novel chronicling the year Guy Delisle spent living in Jerusalem while his partner worked as an aid worker in the west bank and Gaza. I am the worst person to review this book! Not because of any specific political leaning (I am a good old dirty leftist), but because I spent 20 of my 34 years of my life living there and my experience taints my impression of the book. I’ve been strangely home […]

I think there is more visibility for stories with older and middle aged women. I’m here for it.

I'm really enjoying what feels like an increase in good stories about middle aged women. Maybe they just didn't come...
