Arkham’s descent into madness

June 1, 2014 by tillie 1 Comment

I’ve always held the belief that the best batman stories aren’t about batman at all. Arkham Asylum further strengthened my personal hypothesis. On April Fools day Batman gets a call from the Joker, locked in Arkham Asylum. The prisoners have broken out of their cells and are taking the staff and other innocents hostage. Batman can save them, but only if he voluntarily submits himself to the treatment of Arkham Asylum. When he gets there the hostages are let free without any hassle, but the […]

Art, life and a long journey

May 31, 2014 by Fofo Leave a Comment

Target: Yoshihiro Tatsumi’s A Drifting Life.  Translated by Taro Nettleton.  English design and lettering by Adrian Tomine. Profile: Autobiography, Manga, Graphic Novel A Drifting Life is a wonderfully thick tome of a graphic novel.  Equal parts autobiography, national history and understated drama; the book chronicles the story of one of the founding fathers of Japanese Manga.  The style pioneered by Yoshihiro Tatsumi was one of the first attempts to turn cartoons into a medium for serious works.  Appropriately, his story is a serious one, touching on the themes […]

I’m not sure I’d look for a new start in a town called Lovecraft

May 11, 2014 by Malin 1 Comment

Tyler, Kinsey and Bode Locke move with their mother to Keyhouse, their uncle’s mansion in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, after their father, a school guidance councillor, is brutally murdered by a couple of Tyler’s classmates. The entire Locke family are naturally extremely affected by the event, especially the eldest brother Tyler, who feels responsible for the event, and for not managing to rescue both his parents. Kinsey, his sister,  was hiding and keeping their youngest brother Bode safe, but she’s suffering with survivor’s guilt and dealing with […]

Pretty much everything I know about the Boxer Rebellion, I learned from these books

May 11, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

In Boxers, we see the origins of the Chinese Boxer rebellion through the eyes of Bao, who becomes one of its leaders. Bao grows up in rural China at the end of the 19th Century. He lives for the spring every year when travelling troups perform operas, full of drama, excitement and ancient stories of heroes and gods. The stories stay with him throughout the rest of the year when he performs his chores and is teased by his older brothers. His life changes irrevocably the day one […]

And Now It’s Getting Really Crazy…

May 1, 2014 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

Just as the whole series of Locke & Key started out gruesome and somewhat upsetting, so does Keys to the Kingdom hit the same stride. Developments are made regarding the identity of the dark woman, and teenage hormones run wild as relationships are formed, splintered, patched, and ultimately scarred beyond ever returning to the way they were. And poor little Bode is left taking more hits than he should, as he is essentially left at the mercy of the actions of his siblings and the […]

“Find Tom! Please! Tell him you saw Lizzie Hexam!”

April 25, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

This trade paperback of The Unwritten collects issues 42-49 of the comic. It’s been going for years now and is really quite heavily arc-based, so I wouldn’t start with this one. It’s a great comic, especially for anyone who loves books and reading. Start at the beginning with Tommy Taylor and the Bogus Identity. Standard disclaimer about possible spoilers for earlier books in review, just so no one can say they weren’t warned. Tommy Taylor discovers that Lizzie is not lost, she’s just trapped in the Underworld, and […]
