Stick and Stone Explore and More. by Beth Ferry

Simon and Chester V02 Super Sleepover by Cale Atkinson

February 10, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport Other country (Simon & Chester author from British Columbia) Two cute stories for the at least five and up crowd found their way to my reading table the other day. I was looking for something quick, and they seem to fit the bill. The first was Stick and Stone Explore and More. This book by Beth Ferry is at least the second in a series. The adult reader should be fine picking it up but do find the introduction story for the kiddos! Mostly […]

Me + Tree by Alexandria Giardino

February 9, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport, different country (illustrators from Italy and the young girl is from “other country” than where she is living) A young girl, in a fantastic way, learns about an old tree, now a stump, but using her imagination and the knowledge she has of being alone and unseen. Having moved to this strange city, she, and the tree commune to show each other how the world is a beautiful place, and how to help each other and the world around them. The result is how […]

Nefarious forces, scheming plots, and a water demon

The Queen’s Favorite Witch V02 The Lost King by Benjamin Dickson

February 8, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport another country (set in England, both author & illustrator live in UK) The Queen’s Favorite Witch V02 The Lost King has the old distinction of being maybe not as good as the first, but also just as good as the first. I mean, I enjoyed volume one (even though it was a familiar story, it felt fresh and new) and built the second volume up so much (hard not to, even subconsciously) it was of course going to happen. But this time, we have […]

Two boys, one city, and their places in it

Moonwalking by Zetta Elliott and Lyn Miller-Lachmann

February 6, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Moonwalking is an interesting story about friendship in early 1980s America. The characters are both likable and relatable, and the (SPOILER) not so happy ending, is a nice change of pace from having it “all be okay” and working out in the best possible outcome.  The tone mostly feels realistic (though I am not sure (SPOILER) if Pie sending his address to JJ would have happened). The supporting cast could have been explored a bit more, but what is needed to promote and support the […]

Remarkable author and their remarkable series and the remarkable new one

Remarkably Ruby (Emmie & Friends, #6) by Terri Libenson

February 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Remarkably Ruby (Emmie & Friends, #6) by Terri Libenson continues the characters we have grown to love in the other Emmie & Friends graphic novels. But this time we take a character we have only seen as a running joke (literally as she is usually running to the bathroom) and one I do not remember seeing. Having these two characters who are the narrators not featured in other books was nice. You see the established world of this middle school environment in a new light. And […]

Opposite in nature

Gray Fox in the Moonlight by Isaac Peterson

The Garden Next Door by Collin Pine

February 2, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I probably should have put Gray Fox in the Moonlight with another book I reviewed due to their similarities of spiritualism but decided to pair it with The Garden Next Door as they are complete opposites. One (Gray Fox) is a soft, lullaby about the fox wandering the forest at night. It deals with nature, but at natures level. The other, (Garden) is loud and bold filled with much activity and critters of all shapes, sizes, and leg count. Isaac Peterson brings Gray Fox in […]
