Stay Out of the Forest!

Small Angels by Lauren Owen

December 25, 2025 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Bride-to-be Chloe has found the perfect setting for her wedding in the rustic church called Small Angels, but a presence stirring in the bordering woods may put an end to her places – and her life. Sometimes you just have to stay out of the forest. And tell your out of town bride that the church she wants to get married in might be haunted. This book is a bit back to the basics as far as folk horror is concerned – creepy forests and […]

Cold magic, revolution, and love

Cold Magic by Kate Elliott

Cold Fire by Kate Elliott

Cold Steel by Kate Elliott

This review is for emmalita.  I haven’t been writing reviews in months due to life reasons but I wanted to share with her how awesome I found this trilogy.  Instead of writing her a bunch of texts, I decided it was time to write a review.  Emmalita introduced me to Kate Elliott with The Keeper’s Six.  Earlier this year I devoured Elliott’s’ The Witch Roads and it got me wanting to explore her back catalog so I got the audiobook version of Cold Magic, book one […]

Ship of Destiny: The Liveship Traders Book 3 by Robin Hobb

December 17, 2025 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Trigger warning for rape and gaslighting  Well, the Liveship Traders Trilogy was incredibly good! I would have to agree that this trilogy is better than The Farseer Trilogy, and I loved that one. Ship of Destiny tied up important story lines while also leaving the door open to further developments for the main characters later. As ever, Robin Hobb juggles multiple plot lines with ease and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat to the end. I have a new appreciation for certain […]

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter

The Bloody Chamber

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter

December 17, 2025 by xoxoxoe 2 Comments

I recently decided to re-read The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter (it was my choice for my book group). It was as fun as I remembered. Carter’s sexy takes on traditional fairy tales like “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Puss in Boots” is at times over-the-top in its prose, humor, and horror – which suits her feminist takes on damsels in all sorts of distress perfectly. She delivers a great vampire tale, “The Lady of the House of Love,” too.  But I think […]

As the worlds turn

Mad Ship: The Liveship Traders Trilogy book 2 by Robin Hobb

December 5, 2025 by ElCicco 1 Comment

Book 2 of this trilogy was an absolute stunner, as my conceptions of certain characters and situations were challenged and changed. Hobb continues to weave multiple complex story lines together and fleshes out her characters in such a way that I am conflicted about whom to root for or even what I am rooting for now. The Liveship Traders Trilogy is about a colonial empire facing rebellion, about a rebellion amongst Old Trader families who do not necessarily agree with each other, about enslaved and […]

Worm-Mandated Soulmates

Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon

December 1, 2025 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Georgie has been kidnapped by aliens – but when she and her fellow captives crash-land on an icy planet, they must ally with the strange locals to survive. I’ve been pretty covetous of this series since I saw the beautiful covers of the paperback rereleases – and luckily the stories have been very fun too! The author builds a cohesive culture and society throughout this very long series, with a wide variety of heroes, heroines, and tropes explored. Since I read this book, I have […]
