I love inappropriate moments. They’re my favourite moments.

The Raven Scholar: The Eternal Path Book #1 by Antonia Hodgson

Petty grudges are an excellent spur to action. ― Antonia Hodgson, The Raven Scholar “Fascinating,” the emperor said, rubbing his mouth as he took in her appearance. Fascinating was another of those court words, like astonishing, and remarkable, but even worse. Never fascinate an emperor. ― Antonia Hodgson, The Raven Scholar Neema Kraa is happy with her job as an imperial junior archivist and calligrapher. She is proud of how much she has achieved on her own. That’s what people say when they learn of […]

“It was like reading a book, she decided. You read the book and the words became scenes, the characters became people and they lived inside you.”

Reading epic fantasy isn’t really a thing I do that often, but sometimes, you just need to listen to your book friends when they fall in love with something. It has proven to be a good method for me previously, so why not try again with a beautiful purple covered book and plot synopsis that grab the attention without giving a whole lot away.    It should be noted that I loved this 650-page book. It’s a five-star read for me, easily. But… I have struggled for weeks to figure out how to review it, so I’m sort of throwing my hands up […]

Not what I expected, but absolutely amazing

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson

February 14, 2026 by Ellesfena 3 Comments

So at the end of last year, I decided that 2026 would be the year that I fully indulged my love for dark academia. I did some googling and put together a list of books that were considered part of the genre. Somewhere I came across The Raven Scholar and put it at the top of my list, as everyone seemed to love it. While reading it, I realized two things: 1) while there are a few dark academia elements, it’s not a book that I […]

Strong start to CBR18!

The Raven Scholar: Eternal Path Trilogy Book 1 by Antonia Hodgson

January 1, 2026 by ElCicco 6 Comments

The Raven Scholar got a lot of great reviews in CBR17 so I downloaded it before the holidays and spent a COVID-filled Christmas reading it — one bright note in a somewhat icky season for my family. I already knew that my CBR18 was going to be filled with fantasy lit due to my new Robin Hobb obsession, but now I can add Antonia Hodgson’s trilogy to the list. I can’t wait to read book 2, whenever that comes out. The world where The Raven […]

Murder, Politics and a Pantheon of Gods

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson

December 14, 2025 by Jen K 5 Comments

Damn! This was so good. I had already picked this novel up because I have been seeing it everywhere and then Malin and narfna both gave it glowing recommendations so I bumped it up on the list. I don’t remember what review or description I had read earlier this summer but between the recommendations and me thinking I knew what it was about, I went in without reading the description again, and while technically, I wasn’t totally wrong about what the novel was about, I […]

Quoth the Raven ‘WE ARE MAGNIFICENT’

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson

April 24, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

I have a bit of a fascination with ravens, so when I saw Antonia Hodgson’s new release The Raven Scholar at the bookstore, it immediately caught my eye (it’s also purple and shiny, two other things that please me for no logical reason). I didn’t know much about the author or the plot, so I went into this one fairly blind. Set in a world where people can join organizations (somewhat of a mix between religious and vocational) dedicated to the sort-of God-spirits of various […]
