The fictional town of Crabgrass Drive has a story it wants to tell

Crabgrass: Comic Adventures (Volume 1). by Tauhid Bondia

September 27, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The trials and tribulations of being a kid “back in the day” (before cell phones and computers) is the premise of Crabgrass: Comic Adventures (Volume 1). Sometimes things are over-the-top, but through it all, there are a few messages about just being yourself, being loyal to friends, realizing that  things are going to be okay, things are better than you think, and embarrassment comes with the job. And all the while the two main characters must watch out for crazy siblings and crazier parents. Tauhid Bondia knows […]

Dragon sniffles

 Roar-Choo! by Charlotte Cheng

September 26, 2023 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

I have a soft spot for Dan Santat’s work. Therefore, when I saw he was promoting a new book due in April 2024, Roar-Choo!, I knew I was going to need a copy. And as much as I prefer paper, desperate times call for desperate measures and I picked up Charlotte Cheng’s picture book via an online reader copy. This book is an adorable bedtime story in general, or for when your own dragon has a sniffle or two (and hopefully without the sneezes that are as […]

Lazy weekend reads

Leon the Extraordinary: A Graphic Novel (Leon Volume one) by Jamar Nicholas

Meems & Feefs: Ferrets from Planet Ferretonia! (Volume one) by Liza N. Cooper

The Prisoner of  Shiverstone by Linette Moor

September 26, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was having a lazy weekend. I needed reading material that would be fun for the kid me, and not overly taxing for the adult me.  And I found two and a half books that fit the bill. I say two and a half because the third one had a bit more meat on the overall story than the others, so there was a bit more thinking required on my part. However, kids will eat all of them up as they are good stories. The […]

“Families are like fingerprints; no two are the same, and they tend to leave their mark.”

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney

September 22, 2023 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR 15 Bing0 – Politics This is my first Alice Feeney and it is a good book for spoooooky season. Feeney does her own spin on an Agatha Christie-style “And Then There Were None” story, in that she sort of cribbed from it entirely in a number of key ways. Britain? Check. Isolated group on an island? Check. Creepy rhymes (in this case, poems)? Check. People starting dying one by one? Check. That said, her take on the construct was refreshing and kept me turning […]

Never meet your heroes

My Buddy, Killer Croc by Sara Farizan

September 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The focus of having the character of Killer Croc (Waylon Jones) as the “hero” in the Sara Farizan and Nicoletta Baldari graphic novel, My Buddy, Killer Croc, is a familiar but good twist. However, the one thing I was wondering is if the reader will understand that Killer Croc, no matter how “good or nice” he seems, is not a “good guy” due to how he is mostly good to the main character (or seems to be on the surface). There is an interesting nod to […]

A heartstring pulling, tear jerking story

If Anything Happens I Love You by Will McCormack

September 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I did and do like this book, If Anything Happens I Love You . However, it is a “pull at your heartstrings” story that is a smidgen pushy. Yet, the fact the creators, Will McCormack, Michael Govier, and  Youngran Nho focus on the life of our main character, and not her death, is refreshing. Of course, we see the grieving of her parents, but that is just a piece of the larger puzzle of the situation at hand. This is a celebration of life, love and healing. […]
