He wanted a litter of puppies, he got three sisters

My Life Begins! by Patricia MacLachlan

April 25, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am sad to say that My Life Begins! is probably going to be the last book by Patricia MacLachlan we will have. Unless, she had things in the works that will come out after August 2022 (when My Life Begins! comes out). But either way, this book does not disappoint. It is an adorable book about siblings without the drama. It is an adorable book about finding who you are not only to yourself but to others. It is a cozy (short) story about […]

Down in the (city) in a little bitty pool Swam several little fishies (or kids in this case)

Swim Team by Johnnie Christmas

April 25, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This adorable face looked up at me when I was looking at books in a catalog (okay, I know I’m old, but it was an online catalog, so no gruff okay?). It was of middle-schooler Bree. She was staring up and out with these sweet brown eyes, an impish smile, and a confidence I wanted to meet. So, meet her I did in Swim Team by Johnnie Christmas. What on the surface is a cute story of middle school woes with a little history included […]

I might have a little Punky in me

Punky Aloha by Shar Tuiasoa

April 25, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Punky Aloha was a book I found in an email newsletter from the publisher. I then looked it up on a site where we can order and find book information and occasionally, a full reader copy. And Shar Tuiasoa’s book was there with a reader copy link I could use. I was blown away by how adorable Punky Aloha was. There she was in her big glasses, her piled-high hair and her impishly sweet smile. I was hoping Punky would not be a “bratty kid” […]

What is your relationship with your grandfather?

Gigi and Ojiji by Melissa Iwai

April 19, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I find it amusing when I want to review an early/easy reader. After all, it is funny that a book that probably has less than 250 words needs a review of 250 words. Gigi and Ojiji by Melissa Iwai has a lot going on in it. There is the daughter/mother relationship. There is the granddaughter/grandfather relationship. And there is the culture relationship. You learn Gigi is biracial (Japanese mother, white father) by just seeing it. There is no HEY LOOK! I AM DIFFERENT yelling off […]

I needed a title, so it is called I needed a title for this book I read

Still Mine by Jayne Pillemer

April 8, 2022 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

Still Mine by Jayne Pillemer was published earlier this year. I may or may not have reviewed it before, but I know I have read it. And I think I might not have enjoyed it as much last time as this time. It is a solid 3.5 or 4 for its rating. I know many are not fans of that “average 3” but I like to think that a 3 means it is a solid story, maybe it will not set your pants on fire […]

Quirky and fun (for different ages)

Barb the Last Berzerker V02 Barb and the Ghost Blade by Dan (Abdo) and Jason (Patterson)

The Nightmare Bridge V02: Into the Woods by Frank Thillez

April 5, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sequels are an interesting thing. In the book world you can wait years for one or sometimes, it can be only months. I was able to find two sequels that are probably no more than a year has passed between them, but I had forgotten some key pieces.  This is the bane of sequels: forgetting plot points, characters or even a storyline. However, it just means, reading again book one! Thankfully in Barb the Last Berzerker V02 Barb and the Ghost Blade, there was (or […]
