He wanted a litter of puppies, he got three sisters

My Life Begins! by Patricia MacLachlan

April 25, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am sad to say that My Life Begins! is probably going to be the last book by Patricia MacLachlan we will have. Unless, she had things in the works that will come out after August 2022 (when My Life Begins! comes out). But either way, this book does not disappoint. It is an adorable book about siblings without the drama. It is an adorable book about finding who you are not only to yourself but to others. It is a cozy (short) story about […]

Magical words, friendships and a dog named Rex

Wondrous Rex by Patricia MacLachlan

September 6, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As much as I love Patricia MacLachlan, Wondrous Rex, was a bit “off” for me. I think this is because it was just too short! Sometimes novels only need a “handful” of pages and sometimes two handfuls. Because of this shortness, it would have made a fantastic longer than usual sized picture book. The other part that was a tad off for me was that Grace seemed a bit mature for being just 7. Yet, the child reader will have no issues with this. The […]

Two heads are better than one, unless you are a PushMe-PullYou

My Father’s Words by Patricia MacLachlan

July 23, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr11bingo #TwoHeadsareBetterThanOne My Father’s Words by Patricia MacLachlan is a modern story with the classic elements of loss, family, friendships and growth. While some areas are based on the authors own life, this is a fictious story about a young girl, Fiona, and her family dealing with the loss of her father. Told in Fiona’s voice, we see the past mixed in with the current grief the characters all share. But a grief all must process differently. Like many of MacLachlan’s stories, this is a sweet story. […]

Bowie and Sylive say it best: Just Dance

Just Dance by Patricia MacLachlan

April 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Patricia MacLachlan is an “old school” author or what I call a “grandparent friendly author” as nothing “bad” happens in the story. Sure, Sylvie Bloom gets sick near the end of the book, but nobody is worried she will die. Nor are there any drawn-out weeks of worrying. Even the “excitement” of the dog locked in a car really is not all that worrisome as you know that Sheriff Bud will miraculously save the day. Even Sylvie’s name, Bloom, is happy and a shadowing to […]
