Finally read this one!

September 22, 2015 by badkittyuno 4 Comments

Quite a few Cannonballers have reviewed Code Name Verity over the past few years, and just about everyone has raved about it (less so for the sequel, which bums me out, but I plan to read it anyway). I finally snagged myself a copy, and I have to say I totally loved this book — it lives up to the hype! I have two weeks. You’ll shoot me at the end no matter what I do. The first half of the novel takes place in the form of […]

Tell The World

May 31, 2015 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

Last year I read and enjoyed Elizabeth Wein’s Code Name Verity for Cannonball Read 6 and the Go Fug Yourself Book club on Goodreads. There was much about Wein’s work with that novel that worked very well and the level of craftsmanship in the character and world building as well as the intricacies of the plot put Rose Under Fire, her second book set in the same world, immediately on my to read list for this year. I wish I could say that Rose lived […]

Best Book I’ve Read This Year

December 3, 2014 by Sophia 7 Comments

I’ve had Code Name Verity (2012) by Elizabeth Wein in my library queue for months. I think at least twice it came up, but I either forgot to check it out in time or ran out of time to read it. Part of the problem was I couldn’t remember why I’d chosen to read it. I vaguely remembered that it was a young adult novel set during World War II that had something to do with women spies. I was imagining some kind of Disney-fied […]

Fly the plane, Maddie.

I decided to finally read Code Name Verity when it was announced as the first Go Fug Yourself book club selection. It seemed like a perfectly lovely excuse to pick up a book I’d been meaning to for ages. I’m glad I did, because the book really got under my skin, and as a historian I was ridiculously pleased with Elizabeth Wein’s research and the selected bibliography she supplied at the end of the book which included a museum exhibit! *insert museum professional happy dance* […]

Girl Pilots! WWII!

July 19, 2014 by Rachie3879 5 Comments

There are certain things a writer can focus on in their novel to ensure that I will at least give it a shot (if I know about the book), and in all likelihood, I will really dig it. One of them is using World War II as a backdrop. I find a lot of wars interesting but this one in particular fascinates me. The atrocities committed against humanity during this time period, and the willingness of so many people to just go along with them […]
