I probably rewrote this review a billion times before I thought I was done, then realized I needed more, so just read this book okay?

You Can Never Die: A Graphic Memoir by Harry Bliss

February 20, 2025 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I learned early on in my journey of reading Harry Bliss that there are two styles when it comes to his artwork. One is kid friendly and the other adult friendly. However, via an online reader copy of You Can Never Die: A Graphic Memoir, I learned there is a third type to Bliss: the really adult Bliss. This memoir takes slices of life and puts them on the page of a journal. These journal entries, illustrations and more come out in the book. He […]

For the dog lovers (you’ll need tissues for the funny and the sad moments)

Hazel the Handful by Jamie Michalak and Matt Myers

Where Are You, Brontë? by Tomie dePaola and Barbara McClintock

February 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Are you a dog person? Are you looking for two new books to read about dogs? Well the first book below has a theme of dog and sibling rivalry. And the second, well it is a bit more sad. It is about the loss of a beloved pet named Bronte by one of my all time favorite authors. Hazel the Handful by Jamie Michalak and illustrated by Matt Myers (due early April 2025; read via an online reader is a cute story about sibling rivalry […]

Alas, a Plumber’s Life Was Not to Be

Cluny Brown by Margery Sharp

February 8, 2025 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

This is a used book that I picked up at some library sale eons ago, because I recognized the title.  It had been made into a 1940s “woman’s” flick that starred Jennifer Jones, and that was about all I remembered.  I was curious as to how closely the movie might have followed the book, but decided to read it first.  Judging that our introduction to Cluny is that she is an orphan in her late teens, taken in by a rather sour uncle who is […]

Wagnificent tail… tale

Wagnificent V02 A New Dog in the Den by Bethanie Murguia

Wagnificent V01 The Adventures of Thunder and Sage by Bethanie Murguia

January 28, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking at online reader copies when I noticed Wagnificent: A New Dog in the Den by Bethanie Murguia. I did not realize it was book two until I started reading it. There were some comments and pieces that were not adding up, making it feel like it wasn’t the first book. Even if you are the ages it is aimed for, I don’t think you would have to read book one to know what is happening in two, but it probably would help […]

A dog is a dog

My Name is Jem: a tale of a guide dog superstar by Olivia Muscat

November 15, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My Name is Jem: a tale of a guide dog superstar is a delightful introduction to the subject of a guide/service dog. In a child friendly (but slightly “talk down” to adults at times), and through the eyes of Jem themselves, we see the things a guide/service dog does. Such as how they help their handler or how they became a guide dog and so forth. We also learn that a dog, regardless of their job, is a dog and likes downtime, playtime, pets and […]

Dogs slobber! They smell! They POOP! And they bark!

Dog Trouble by Kristin Varner

November 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Dog Trouble by Kristin Varner came up in my older online reader copies. I was at first not thinking I would read as I am a cat, not dog person, and the cover made me think I knew what was going to happen (a lot of chasing rowdy dogs that really aren’t cute but annoying and a kid who doesn’t “get” the seriousness of things). But it was more than that. At first things felt like “all the other books” about separated and/or divorced families […]
