These are the books I finished in the month of March in which I didn’t have time or words to elaborate on… Batman: The Killing Joke *** Two of my favorites team up for a Batman prose novel? Yes! But the end result is just okay. Interestingly enough, I think both writers do a better job with the random Gothamites than they do with the Caped Crusader and his primary nemesis. You’re fine just reading Alan Moore’s legendary graphic novel. The Big East: Inside the […]

Maybe should have done the audiobook instead?

In the Country We Love: My Family Divided by Diane Guerrero, Michelle Burford

July 9, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 18/30 Like other people have said in their reviews, this is an interesting story, a story that should be told, but unfortunately the book itself just isn’t very well written. It felt underdeveloped and amateurish, even with the co-author. (It also bothered me that the publishing company/editor couldn’t bother to include accents and tildes when the author used Spanish, but that’s not the author’s fault and didn’t really affect my rating; I just wanted to complain about it. Esta […]

In the Country We Love: My Family Divided by Diane Guerrero

May 2, 2021 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I put this book on my to read list back in May of 2016, shortly after its publication. I don’t remember now what spurred me to do so, but at the end of the day its always the same basic reason – there was a story here that I wanted to know more about. In the Country We Love is Guerrero’s story of growing up the daughter of undocumented immigrants, and the course of her life following their deportments. It’s a big, important story. You […]

“Human beings are not categorically bad because of their mistakes.”

So when I picked up In the Country We Love: My Family Divided, I thought for a second that the girl on the cover looked just like Lea Michele, but wasn’t. Then I started reading it. It took me about a quarter of the way into the book, looking at this girl’s pictures from growing up, to realize that she IS an actress, and I know her from Orange is the New Black. So everyone else is probably ahead of me on that, but I would […]

A Review in Two Segments

October 3, 2016 by ASKReviews 2 Comments

The Story I want to start this review with a discussion of the story Ms. Guerrero tells. It is a fascinating, interesting, sweet and inspirational story. You likely know Ms. Guerrero from her roles on Jane the Virgin and Orange is the New Black – she’s tiny, Colombian and talented as hell. A couple of years ago, she shared that her parents had been deported after authorities learned they were undocumented. This left Ms. Guerrero – then 14 and a US citizen – to essentially […]
