Pancakes. Jello Shots. “Uptown Funk”.

Delicious! by Ruth Reichl

January 23, 2019 by janet snakehole 2 Comments

Swedish Fish. Movie Popcorn. My mom’s fudge that she makes every Christmas (sorry Mom). This is a list of things that I love SO VERY VERY much at first and I simply cannot get enough!!, but then OHHHH GODDDD I’m super sick of it. That’s exactly the list to which I am adding this sweet, charming but hooo-boy overly long book. It was just a little- actually quite a bit- too much and I should’ve quit while I was ahead. I have to say, I adored the first half (or so) of this one. Ruth Reichl is a good writer, […]

Eating in the light of the moon

Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationship with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling by Anita Johnston

November 29, 2018 by tillie Leave a Comment

When you suffer from eating disorders you carry your illness on your body. Every pound you carry is a failure, a battle lost and it can be shameful just to exist in a public space. Everything you eat becomes a punishment, a reward, an expression, pretty much anything other than nourishment for you body. Eating in the light of the moon is a book about eating that hardly mentions food. Dr. Anita Johnston is a clinical psychologist who specializes in women’s eating disorders. Rather than focusing on food she tries to go one step deeper focusing on the role that […]

Love, Loss, and What We Ate: A Memoir by Padma Lakshmi

November 8, 2018 by Dome'Loki 3 Comments

A friend game me Love, Loss, and What We Ate: A Memoir by Padma Lakshmi as a birthday present.  She acknowledged that non-fiction isn’t really my thing but she thought I might find it interesting.  She hadn’t read the book herself but had heard good things about it.  I don’t recall ever having read an autobiography, or biography for that matter.  And my friend was completely correct about me not being into non-fiction.  This is only my second non-fiction book this year out of my current 47 reviews. Before starting this book I knew two things about Padma Lakshmi, that she modeled […]

That wasn’t on the menu

The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan

November 6, 2018 by octothorp Leave a Comment

You guys, my “delicious” bingo square was supposed to be about food. I love reading about food – cooking, restaurants, food culture, the science of taste – it’s all catnip to me.  My coworkers mock me.  This was supposed to be an automatic good review.    It’s written by Michael Pollan.  It’s in the food writing section.  It’s subtitled “a natural history of four meals.” So where’s the food writing? I feel like the reader expecting Moby Dick to be an action tale and getting fifty pages describing whale blubber.  I might have preferred that, actually, at least muktuk is […]

This book will make you hungry (Third bingo!)

The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy E. Reichert

October 24, 2018 by Malin 1 Comment

#CBR10Bingo: Delicious From Goodreads: In downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lou works tirelessly to build her beloved yet struggling French restaurant, Luella’s, into a success. She cheerfully balances her demanding business and even more demanding fiancé…until the morning she discovers him in the buff—with an intern. Witty yet gruff British transplant Al is keeping himself employed and entertained by writing scathing reviews of local restaurants in the Milwaukee newspaper under a pseudonym. When an anonymous tip sends him to Luella’s, little does he know he’s arrived on the worst day of the chef’s life. The review practically writes itself: underdone fish, scorched […]

Dropping the Hammer

Maangchi's Real Korean Cooking: Authentic Dishes for the Home Cook by Maangchi

September 19, 2018 by lumenatrix 1 Comment

**I want to add a quick update because this is cracking me up. Ever since I posted this review, half of the ads I see on websites are in Korean. Apparently just taking the time to look up the correct names of food is enough to convince the bots you’re bilingual!**   I’m a little unsure exactly how to review a cookbook, but I’m going to take a crack at it, because this is a good one.   I first found Maangchi via her YouTube channel , where she does step-by-step tutorials for Korean recipes. Her personality, and her outfits, […]

Yes, she can be a little “extra.” But the food is delicious.

Cravings: Recipes for All the Food You Want to Eat by Chrissy Teigen, Adeena Sussman, Aubrie Pick

September 6, 2018 by scootsa1000 2 Comments

I think at this point, most of humanity is familiar with Chrissy Teigen. I follow her on Twitter and Instagram. I enjoy her comment round-ups on Comments by Celebrities. I love her obsession with Walter(Owen’s Grandp), who may or may not be real. Her kids are adorable and her mothering is relatable. Her husband seems cool and pretty normal for a massive celebrity. And like a lot of others, SOMETIMES I CANNOT GET THE RIDICULOUS HEADBAND OF THE DAY SONG OUT OF MY HEAD. Sure, she can be annoying with her no-holds-barred tweeting. But I find her amusing. I also […]

All Those Seafood Descriptions Sure Sound Tasty To Me!

Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown

August 31, 2018 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

Continuing with my intake of pirate-themed books and tv this year, we have Cinnamon and Gunpowder! A delicious (haha) and fun story from the point of view of a master chef named Owen in the 1800s who is kidnapped by an infamous pirate captain known as Mad Hannah Mabbot: Mabbot has killed Owen’s previous employer, and takes him on to her ship with the intention of making him prepare for her a delicious meal every Sunday. From this basic premise we see Owen struggle to try and escape, as well as to figure out how exactly to prepare fancy meals […]
