“We are never feckless”, I told her coldly. “We are full to the brim with feck.”

An Unexpected Peril by Deanna Raybourn

May 10, 2021 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This is book 6 in an ongoing series. There will be minor spoilers for earlier books in the series. You can read these without having any background, but it’s always best to start at the beginning, which happens to be A Curious Beginning.    Intrepid lepidopterist and sometime crime solver Veronica Speedwell and her grouchy partner and now lover Revelstoke Templeton-Vane (goes by Stoker) are working on preparing a memorial exhibition at the Curiosity Club for one of its recently deceased members, pioneer mountain climber […]

I am not going to take you on top of a moldy sarcophagus.

A Murderous Relation by Deanna Raybourn

CBR12 BINGO: Red I am already worried about the day when Raybourn stops writing these Veronica Speedwell mysteries. Truly. These books and Sherry Thomas’ Lady Sherlock series are what fill the little hole in my heart that Gail Carriger left when the Parasols and Protectorate series ended. I need my witty banter laced with sexual tension. I yearn for characters with quirky occupations, impeccable fashion sense and taste for tea and sweets. Give me passages like this and I am satisified: “Veronica,” he said flatly, ” I am not going […]

Kidnappings, murders and snooping around in a high-class brothel

A Murderous Relation by Deanna Raybourn

June 23, 2020 by Malin Leave a Comment

This is the fifth book in the Veronica Speedwell series. There will absolutely be spoilers for some of the previous books in the series. Skip this review if you’re not up to date. It’s an excellent series; if you want to start at the beginning, pick up A Curious Beginning.  Official description: Veronica Speedwell and her natural historian colleague Stoker are asked by Lady Wellingtonia Beauclerk to help with a potential scandal so explosive it threatens to rock the monarchy. Prince Albert Victor is a regular visitor to […]

It puts such a strain on your quaint island retreat when someone tries to murder you

A Dangerous Collaboration by Deanna Raybourn

June 19, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This is book four in an ongoing series, and while you get enough information to follow the plot, you’re definitely better off starting at the beginning. Especially since there are quite a lot stuff that’s been building for the entire series that finally begins to come to fruition in this book, and it’ll be a lot more satisfying if you’ve read the preceding three books. From Goodreads: Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell is whisked off to a remote island off the tip of Cornwall when her […]

She was my other half when I had not realized I was incomplete.

A Dangerous Collaboration by Deanna Raybourn

As soon as Goodreads alerts me that a new Veronica Speedwell mystery is coming out, I immediately put in a request at the library. Thankfully, most of the folks that utilize my library either are ill informed about the publishing date of these books or don’t yet know about them. I can generally get my hands on a brand new copy immediately. This is both a good thing AND a bad thing. I get to read it sooner, but I tear through the book too […]

One simply cannot invite people to engage in a spot of justifiable homicide

A Dangerous Collaboration (A Veronica Speedwell Mystery) by Deanna Raybourn

March 2, 2019 by Emmalita 1 Comment

I love the Veronica Speedwell Mystery series. I was first attracted by their excellent covers, but it only took me about 1/3 into the way of the first book to be hooked. I did receive this from Netgalley in exchange for a review. Veronica and Stoker start the book in a chilly place. Their relationship had become emotionally intimate to a point where Veronica needed some space to think about what she wanted. Naturally, Stoker is unhappy and refuses to fall into their old patterns. […]
