Keep the Window Open, Wendy.

I’ll be writing many reviews of this fine lady’s work. Her Veronica Speedwell books  (new one this month, superfans!!!) were my gateway and I devoured the first two of the Lady Julia Grey books (3rd one ready to go in the bedside library pile). After doing some Goodreads snooping, I discovered she had several books set in the 1920’s  so I scooped up and loooooved “Spears of Grass” (So atmospheric. Wonderful saucy heroine and roguish bush pilot word sparring in the wilds of Africa. But […]

Festive celebrations with the March family

November 16, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

After a year of marriage – and numerous adventures – Lady Julia and Brisbane hope for a quiet, intimate Christmas together – until they find themselves at her father’s ancestral estate, Bellmont Abbey, with her eccentric family and a menagerie of animals. Silent Night starts where Dark Enquiry left off, with Julia and Brisbane planning a trip to Italy.  This plan is scuttled, however, when they receive a letter from her father who reminds them that it’s the year to perform the Twelfth Night play […]

Another lady detective in Victorian England

November 15, 2017 by Malin 2 Comments

Orphaned Veronica Speedwell has just buried the last of the two spinster aunts who raised her. She is looking forward to making her own way in the world now, exploring the world while catching butterflies, and possibly allowing herself a dalliance or two with a dashing foreign gentleman. She is shocked to discover an intruder in her home and is shortly thereafter approached by a distraught German baron who insists he has information about her past, and the she is in terrible danger. While Veronica […]

More of Lady Julia’s (mis)adventures

November 14, 2017 by Mikki Blu 4 Comments

This is book five in the Lady Julia Grey series, and apparently the last one since it was published in 2011 and nothing else full length is forthcoming.  There are a few novellas that follow this but that’s it.  It may not be a bad thing to end it, as the characters seemed to be stuck in a rut as far as growth. As usual, the book starts with Julia trying to persuade her now husband Brisbane that she is capable of joining him in […]

More March family madness

November 6, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This is book four in the Lady Julia Grey series, and it begins with the newly wedded couple of Julia and Brisbane on their extended honeymoon.  They are enjoying their connubial bliss, away from the clutches of the March family, but this bliss is interrupted by the arrival of Julia’s sister Portia and brother Plum.  Portia is on a mission to India, in a manner of speaking, to be with the woman who left her previously so that she could have a normal life and […]

It was a dark and gloomy moor

October 30, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This is the third book in the Lady Julia Grey series, and I found myself a little disappointed with some aspects of it.  To begin with, Julia is convinced that Nicholas Brisbane is in love with her – she just has to get him to admit it.  In the first two books, they have had an on again, off again sort of courtship, if you can even call it that.  He helped to solve the mystery of her first husband’s death, and they worked together […]
