My first celebrity memoir, and a well chosen one at that.

August 18, 2017 by ingres77 2 Comments

David Mitchell (no, not that one) is one of the most adorable people that too few people have heard of. I was vaguely familiar with his shows Peepshow and That Mitchell and Webb Look, but it wasn’t until I discovered that almost every episode of Would I Lie to You? was on Youtube that I truly became smitten with his wry, self-deprecating humor. He is so unambiguously British, and has wholly accepted the posh characterization that has somewhat artificially been placed upon him, I don’t […]

This Might Look Familiar…

April 21, 2017 by octothorp Leave a Comment

I’m sure it’s not a first for the site, but it’s the first for me – I’m reviewing this book on the strength of another cannonballer’s review. I liked That Mitchell and Webb Look as well as Peep Show, and the memoir seemed pleasant enough by the first reviewer’s estimation, so why not? The central conceit – the comedian goes through his life story on a walk through his neighborhood necessitated by a bad back – pretty much sums up the book’s tone. Laconic, familiar, […]

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell

Great story, great words, all good.

April 11, 2017 by G.D. Giant 2 Comments

Let me start this review by admitting that I love David Mitchell. I love everything he writes and I love that he interweaves his novels so there are always little references to previous works of his. The Bone Clocks is no different.  I loved it and I loved the small references to previous novels.  Now, you certainly don’t need to read The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet or Black Swan Green to appreciate The Bone Clocks, but you should read them anyway because they […]

I tried to keep this review clean. I failed.

Back Story by David Mitchell

February 6, 2017 by tillie 9 Comments

On the first page I was laughing out loud. On the third page he made a reference to star trek. I am a simple girl. I like dark haired men and references to star trek. I really like David Mitchell (not the novelist). David Mitchell is famous for a million things; his cringeworthy “Mark” in Peep Show, being the other half (or the first half I suppose) of that Mitchell and Webb Look (and Sound), his many appearances on panel shows where he’s known for dry […]

Being David Mitchell (the one that didn’t write Cloud Atlas)

January 26, 2017 by TheShitWizard 3 Comments

First coming across him as Peep Show‘s Mark, and since then on That Mitchell and Webb Look and the ten thousand comedy panel shows that litter the Dave channel, I find David Mitchell very, very funny. Which is why, when finding myself feeling rather down, I chose to read his autobiography. And while Back Story didn’t raise many belly laughs, it was still an amusing and pleasant way to pass some time. David Mitchell would be the first to admit that he’s not had the […]

A quick, creepy read that was just a bit sobering for me

July 1, 2016 by denesteak Leave a Comment

Another day, another Mitchell! I bought Slade House not long after I finished The Bone Clocks because I didn’t want to stop living in Mitchell’s world. It ended up being the perfect accompaniment to Bone Clocks, almost like a side note into the world of Atemporals, souls who are able to live on for centuries in different bodies. Described as a “haunted house” book, Mitchell exercises his horror writing skills in describing Slade House, which is hidden behind a small black iron door down a narrow, winding alley. Nathan Bishop, […]
