Highwaywomen, Smugglers, Ghosts, and Dukes

Moonstruck Madness by Laurie McBain

Chance The Winds of Fortune by Laurie McBain

Dark Before the Rising Sun by Laurie McBain

February 1, 2024 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Moonstruck Madness – 4.5 stars (Aug 2022) Sabrina is a lady by day, but by night she rides as a highwayman, trying to keep her family afloat. When she clashes with the Duke of Camareigh, her schemes begin to unravel. There is not as much swashbuckling adventure as you usually get in these old bodice rippers, but that was more than made up for by the genuinely strong-willed heroine and her rather sensible reasons for clashing with the hero. Lucien is rather arrogant though, and […]

Rambling but charming cozy

Manna From Hades by Carola Dunn

January 5, 2021 by pixifer Leave a Comment

I love Carola Dunn’s Daisy Dalrymple series, so I thought I’d check out her Cornish mystery series. Sadly, the first book, Manna from Hades, can’t compare. It’s the 1960s and Eleanor Trewynn is an elderly widow living Cornwall. Eleanor and her husband spent years traveling the world for the charity LonStar, and after he passed she opened a LonStar charity shop in her hometown. Eleanor enjoys being back in England and living so close to her niece Megan, who was recently promoted to a Detective […]

“Luxury is the total fulfillment of all five senses at once.”

The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher

September 19, 2020 by Ellesfena 6 Comments

CBR Bingo: White Whale When I was a kid, our house had a hallway that ran between the living room and my parents’ bedroom. It was wider than a normal hallway, and lined with bookshelves that were filled with both books and pictures. One of my chores as a child was to dust this room. The Shell Seekers, in all its 80s floral and embossed glory, was one of the books that was kept in this room, and one I always remember seeing it as […]

Are you a good witch or a bad witch?

Greenwitch by Susan Cooper

July 3, 2020 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

Bingo: Green Book #3 in The Dark is Rising series, I always loved Greenwitch. In this one, the Drew siblings (Barney, Jane, and Simon) are on holiday in Cornwall with their Great-Uncle Merry, who also happens to be Merriman Lyon, Will Stanton’s mentor from Book 2. Will shows up in Cornwall as well, much to the dismay of the Drews, and it’s soon clear that Will and Merry are on another quest for a Thing of Power to protect the world from the Dark–this time […]

“In the name of King Arthur, and of the old world before the dark came.”

Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper

CBRBingo11 – Back to School! I’ve read this book about 800 times. The first time I read it was with my fifth grade class, and I’ll forever thank Mrs Cook for introducing us to this wonderful story. I blasted through the rest of the five-book “sequence” after that and it remains my favorite middle grade series (before middle grade was a thing). This year I am participating once again in the Dark is Rising readathon  and so it also made sense for this to be […]
