Disney tricked me and I’m not even mad!

If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy

November 1, 2023 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

I have loudly declared for a long time that we should have a hiatus on all Cinderella remakes. And I have rallied for a shorter time on the sad habit of Disney retreading old IP over and over again. It’s not that I am so mad about them redoing the same fairy tales all the time, but in a world where there are truly hundreds of versions of their Disney Princess tales, why not tell a fresh version of the story? I decided to read […]

Cinderella is Dead (RIP)

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

June 21, 2023 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Cinderella gets a Handmaid’s Tale twist for a YA Audience in Bayron’s book, with a queer protagonist too! It has been 200 years since Cinderella got her “Happily Ever After” in the kingdom of Lille.  Her story is now essentially the kingdom’s Bible, but very few people in Lille get to share in a happily ever after of their own. The kingdom is ruled by a cruel king, whose rulebook is a patriarchal nightmare. Curfews for female residents and no freedoms of which to speak; […]

If the Shoe Fits: A Meant to be Novel by Julie Murphy

January 20, 2022 by NoNeinNyet 1 Comment

I picked up If the Shoe Fits, the first in a series of fairy tale modernizations, awhile ago but finally got around to reading it this week. It’s also the first Julie Murphy I’ve read which feels silly because I loved the adaptation of Dumplin’ on Netflix. As you might guess from the title, this first book in the series is a take on Cinderella and it’s just delightful. It’s set on a Bachelor-like reality show which keeps the tone light but also deals with […]

Exactly what you’d expect (which isn’t bad!)

A Kiss at Midnight by Eloisa James

February 16, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

A(nother) recommendation via Cannonball Read-ish/Pajiba. I wouldn’t call this revelatory or a retelling in the vein of McKinley, but it’s definitely the bones of the Cinderella story transplanted to a Regency-ish setting. And I can’t deny that I, personally, enjoyed it quite a bit (as a matter of fact, here is what happened–I started reading this yesterday night, had to put it away because I was very sleepy, and then woke up early this morning remembering that I was reading something I liked without recollecting exactly what it […]

The real book will be even better!

If the Shoe Fits by Deborah Guarino and Seth Hippen

October 16, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I requested this book on NetGalley based on the review of Cannonballer Chris, and then promptly forgot everything about it.  I knew it was a Cinderella variation based on the title, but that was about it.  I think I assumed it was a young adult novel at some point.  I went to open the file recently, and I found to my delight that I was wrong!  It’s a picture book, and a very clever one at that!   It is still a variation on Cinderella.  […]

A must read for Con lovers! (Conventions, not convicts!)

Geekarella by Ashley Poston

October 16, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Why did I wait so long to read this?  This is pure awesomesauce! It’s a Cinderella retelling (obviously) that involves a fan convention (also obviously.)  But it’s more than that. The story revolves around the fictional tv show Starfield, a Star Trek-like show, but Star Trek exists here, so not really?  Maybe it’s closer to the show that Galaxy Quest is about, but it’s really something all its own.  (Ashley Poston does not shy away from using real show and actor names.  Thanks for that!) […]
