I requested this book on NetGalley based on the review of Cannonballer Chris, and then promptly forgot everything about it. I knew it was a Cinderella variation based on the title, but that was about it. I think I assumed it was a young adult novel at some point. I went to open the file recently, and I found to my delight that I was wrong! It’s a picture book, and a very clever one at that!
It is still a variation on Cinderella. If the famous glass slipper was made by a shoemaker and not the fairy godmother, than the shoe could be replicated. And so the shoemaker makes another glass slipper for a different girl, and so the prince is stuck with a bride who is definitely not Cinderella!
The only problem with picture books from NetGalley is that they don’t translate very well to the Kindle app on my phone. Things don’t really line up quite right, which is unfortunate. I’m not sure if that’s all picture books on the Kindle app, or just files from NetGalley. Looking at the sample pages on Amazon makes me more excited for the real book! The artwork is much more detailed than you can see on the phone. Even on the smaller phone pictures, you can tell that the illustrations are nice. The artwork on Mona’s hair stands out – it almost looks real, like they took a picture of hair and incorporated it into the illustration somehow.
The story is told in rhyme, which is great! The language is mostly simple, but there are opportunities to learn new vocabulary. The lines are a bit long, so unless the child is super into the story, I might hold off until the child is maybe 4 or 5.
This title will be released on November 28th, 2019.
