Bingo 4: Middle
OK, so I mentioned a rough week about 2 reviews ago. Here come the middle volumes of Rover Powered (2-3) such as the series currently is [5 out, 6th on the way]. So mid-series for Middle square. Wanda and Wumble go to alchemist training, and Wanda and Wumble go on their first group quest (team misfit!). Still cozy. Sill just what I wanted. And we even get a little bit from Wumble’s doggie perspective.
Once again, the classic frames of the magic school story and first team-up mission are here. In volume 2, are there going to be classmates Wanda might want to keep an eye on? Sure, especially the start student of the class and his tiger familiar. Are there people noticing and starting to keep an eye on Wanda? Also, obviously. Do we have an opportunity to explain things about the magic system in this world? Duh. Even if Wanda doesn’t know exactly what’s going on with her and Wumble’s bond, things are getting noticeable to other characters. Wanda also has an advantage of having been taught some basic alchemy, but who exactly is/was her somewhat mysterious mentor? Hints are suggestive. I’m waiting for her to mention him to someone else. Odds are, that’ll be an informative moment.
In volume 3, apparently tea-based mixers for new adventurer teams are actually a good way to get a new team together, even if it’s comprised all the folks no one cares to team up with, including the fighter who is totally hated in his homeland for reasons we don’t know yet, a rock troll (not the term used in this world) who can only do the most basic magic his kind is capable of, and a wizard with a very strange familiar most folks seem to want to avoid. Plus Wanda who is still struggling to master some magic things, and Wumble who still seems like your average corgi-type dog, until he gets off on his own for a bit. Time to go occorite-monster hunting. But then the team gets split up (unstable floor cave in, because of course), and has to reunite to face a final-boss level occorite monster that is blocking the exit out (because where else would it be). On the one hand, pretty predictable, yet also still quite entertaining.
The big problem now is do I get volume 4 now, or wait a bit until it’s closer to volume 6 release time?
