Superman: Lost by Christopher Priest

May 9, 2025 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

This was another Kareem Abdul-Jabbar pick and while I liked it, I did not find it as compelling as Famous Last Words. Superman: Lost is a graphic novel that involves time travel, PTSD, despair and hope. It is a commentary on our current political climate but also a reflection on our responsibility toward others and the duty to help those in danger, even when our help is unwanted. The story opens with Superman and the members of the Justice League going on a mission. Clark […]

The Prestige by Christopher Priest

October 21, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is the novel written by Christopher Priest that the Christopher Nolan novel is based on. This is one of those novels that I didn’t know existed before the movie, and so my impressions on this come in additional to having seen the movie dozens of times (well like five). Ok, so this novel is really good in a lot of ways, gets a little too off in the final chapters, but ends well. There’s a frame story throughout where Borden’s distant relative meeting up […]

May 29, 2017 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

The Prestige tells the story of a lifelong feud between two magicians in turn-of-the-century England. You’ve probably seen or at least heard of the movie, which starred Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman (and David Bowie as Nicola Tesla! Whee!). The Prestige is the story of Alfred Borden and Rupert Angier, two magicians who rise to fame somewhat simultaneously, and whose lives are marred by a deadly feud that started when Borden exposed Angier as a fraud at a seance. That is. . . one weird […]

What a Mind F&*!

January 26, 2015 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I have never in my life wanted so badly to flip to the back of a book and read the ending. I never do that, but I was majorly tempted here. Luckily, I listened to the audiobook, which prevented me from doing so. Otherwise, I might not have been so strong. “Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called “The Pledge”. The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you […]
