I was hoping for another Wool. This wasn’t what I was hoping for.

January 18, 2017 by scootsa1000 1 Comment

Remember back in CBR5 when we all read Wool and Shift and Dust (also known as the Shift Omnibus) and we all loved them and couldn’t stop talking about Hugh Howey? That trilogy was smart and exciting and we were all fired up about this new name in dystopian sci-fi. A guy who had self-published and made a success out of himself. The story was inspiring and the books were great. We even did a book discussion over on Pajiba, and I truly thought we would be hearing a lot more […]

Bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase “veg out.”

January 17, 2017 by Fiat.Luxury 2 Comments

This is a sticky book.  It’s kind of stuck in my imagination.  I keep turning it over in my head, feeling a little closer to picking up what Kang was putting down.  It’s clever but unassuming, sharp, subtle, violent and serene.  I don’t really know what to do with it, and that makes me like it more.  (I’ll include a few tiny spoilers in this review, but it might be best to go in cold.) Set in South Korea (this is a translation of what was […]

Cheese! Cheese! Cheese

January 17, 2017 by Bea Pants 1 Comment

It was probably unwise to start a book dedicated to cheese right after I made a resolution to start eating more healthy. I was completely unable to handle the descriptions of all the many cheeses as I waited for my lunch hour. My carefully prepared healthy meal suddenly seemed woefully inadequate after the descriptions of delicious and luxurious sounding milky delights. And while this book is not entirely what I expected, I learned a lot about American cheese production that I never knew before. […]

A Girl Named Alf

January 16, 2017 by Mikki Blu 6 Comments

This book is the eleventh in the Maiden Lane series by Elizabeth Hoyt, and it’s a good one!  I’ve read all in the series, and it had its ups and downs along the way but this one is an excellent addition.  Ms Hoyt manages to keep things fresh, and provide a good mix of romance and adventure along the way. These books have featured many characters from both ends of the class spectrum over the years, and this one brings the return of The Ghost […]

This book might get me fired today…..

January 16, 2017 by kella 3 Comments

I fell for it.  Even after reading all the 4 and 5 star reviews of this book, I still got sucked in and couldn’t put it down until I finished it at 2:30am.  Currently I’m fighting the exhaustion that may cause me to fall asleep at my desk and lose my job.  Thanks a lot, Kulti. This is the first book I bought based solely on CBR reviews, and you guys do not disappoint with your recommendations. I won’t dive too deep into a plot […]

This is a really long book, you guys

January 15, 2017 by Malin 14 Comments

We primarily follow the story of three people in this book, with occasional points of view from others to further shed light on goings on. The first (and in my opinion, most interesting) of our protagonists is Kaladin Stormblessed, a surgeon’s son, turned army spearman turned slave. After numerous escape attempts, he ends up at the long-running war on the Shattered Plains, a desolate landscape made up of numerous rocky plateaus, requiring the fighting armies to have bridges to get across the chasms. Kaladin becomes […]
