Okay, did you read the hilarious tweet conversation this summer between Chuck Wendig and Sam Sykes? It’s here. I’ll wait while you read it, because it’s a damned delight of an exchange between two writers who love their work and appreciate genre and enjoy happiness. And then there was another one, this fall. It’s here. Again, I’ll wait. Okay. So, the above was the first I had ever heard of either Wendig or Sykes, and I instantly became a more-likely fan of both because of […]
He loves having people make jokes about his name… so feel free to pile in when introduced.
According to official listings, The Furthest Station is Peter Grant #5.7, which if you ask me is an infuriating state of affairs. I love this series so much, mostly because of the people, places, and things in them. And it’s starting to feel like Aaronovitch is only writing tangents these days. There are the graphic novels plus this novella, but I really mostly want to know is WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH LESLEY MAY. I swear to you, every time I go to Wikipedia to see […]
That Bee Life Hustle
The Bees by Laline Paull, another MGR read, follows an unusual worker bee named Flora 717. The entire novel is written from her perspective. It took me a few pages to realize Flora was an insect! It becomes rather obvious that she has a monotonous existence. She is essentially as garbage bee working sanitation for the hive. Her belly is unusually big, apparently seen as ugly by society. Somehow she is able to talk, unlike other worker bees. She is curious about other parts of […]
“Fears can’t become full-blown phobias if you avoid them, and phobias can’t kill you if you don’t have them…”
I loved this book! I was just feeling lost and didn’t connect with any of the books I was trying to read, so I looked at what was available on the library website, and checked this one out. The Solar family was cursed by Death. Every member of the family has one great fear, and that fear will be the thing that kills them. Esther started her Semi-Definitive List of Worst Fears because of the curse. She writes down anything that scares her even a […]
THUG gave me all the feels
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas deserves all the hype and awards. The story centers around teenager Starr Carter who lives in the African-American community of Garden Heights while attending an expensive private school on the posh side of town. She has two sides of her life, two faces she shows each environment. Her white boyfriend Chris has never met her Dad. Her friend Kenya, who she shares a half-brother with has never met any of her high school friends. The two worlds collide after […]
My #CBR Book Exchange gifts, probably
I am still not 100% sure if these books and the lovely bookmark that arrived in the mail are my CBR Book Exchange gifts, or if they’re part of the Pajiba Krampus gift exchange. However, since both feature on my huge TBR list and that was the one I sent to Katie (thanks again for organising everything), I am going to hope that these are Cannonball gifts. Because Book Depository won’t let you include gift notes, these books were anonymously sent to me – but […]
