All Rights Reserved is an interesting dystopian/science fiction story. It’s set in a future controlled by lawyers. From the age of 15, everyone gets fitted with a cuff around their wrist. From that point on, the cuff charges for every word spoken, even most gestures. These forms of expression are protected by strong copyrights, upheld by the lawyers. Speth, our main character, is just about to give her big speech as she turns 15, when her friend kills himself at her party. His family is […]
A worthy literary endeavor that left me underwhelmed
Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Underground Railroad, was another Mocha Girls Read book club selection. The novel follows Cora on her Odyssey-like journey to escape slavery traveling a magical realistic underground railroad. “Here was the true Great Spirit, the divine thread connecting all human endeavor – if you can keep it, it is yours. Your property, slave or continent. The American imperative.” – page 80 It begins in Africa following the first slaves as they were stolen and brought over to America. From […]
Scandalous mystery tuppers and double cannonball!
On the night of the Parkhurst ball, someone had a scandalous tryst in the library. • Was it Lord Canby, with the maid, on the divan? • Or Miss Fairchild, with a rake, against the wall? • Perhaps the butler did it. All Charlotte Highwood knows is this: it wasn’t her. But rumors to the contrary are buzzing. I was a little reluctant to read this book by Ms Dare, after thoroughly disliking the previous one, but reviews were good so when I saw it […]
Who knew buying a small town on eBay would lead to finding your purpose in life
I had the fortune of visiting The Ripped Bodice to see Beverly Jenkins speak about her new historical romance novel, Breathless. After the event, I was kindly invited to join the LA chapter of Mocha Girls Read book club. I’m so thankful Ms. Jenkins and my favorite bookstore introduced me to a lovely book club group! Having an in-person book club kept up my motivation to read more books to review for Cannonball Read. 🙂 Bring on the Blessings by Beverly Jenkins was the February selection and much needed palette cleanser […]
The last hellion weds
This is the fifth and final book in the Hellions of Halstead Hall series, and it’s the story of Celia Sharpe who is the last member of her family to be wed. As per her grandmother’s edict, Celia and her siblings were to be married in order to gain their inheritance and she is the last holdout. Their parents had died rather mysteriously years earlier, and Celia had become a hoyden who preferred riding and hunting with her brothers than any more feminine pursuits. However, […]
Are you happy with your life?
Jason Dessen is living a good life. He has a decent job, a wife he loves, and a son in a little brownstone in Chicago. Sure there’s choices that he made in the past, choices that he wonders about, but for the most part he is happy. “As long as I’m with you, I know exactly who I am.” One day, coming home from a bar he’s almost hit by a car. And then he’s kidnapped. He doesn’t know why or where, he’s knocked out […]
