Turning in my Feminist Card

Our Stories, Our Voices: 21 YA Authors Get Real about Injustice, Empowerment, and Growing Up Female in America by Amy Reed

March 8, 2022 by BlackRaven 4 Comments

I am turning in my Feminist Card now I have written this review that will most likely be controversial. While I agree with much of what was said in Our Stories, Our Voices: 21 YA Authors Get Real about Injustice, Empowerment, and Growing Up Female in America edited and introduction by Amy Reed, I had a hard time empathizing with most of the essays presented and therefore, had a hard time reading these essays by twenty-one authors. But then again, that was the point of […]

My enemies are too great. Too many. And I too weak.

When I hit the top of the wait-list and was notified by the library that this book was finally available, I was so excited that I actually took a screengrab and texted it to a friend. And it doesn’t disappoint. I will admit that I was vaguely disappointed, but really only because this series has only ever broken new ground in my brain the once, and that was with the first book. A little disappointing, but totally understandable. And come on, if it had changed […]

This is war. Chaos. Chance. Death.

I cannot emphasize enough how much I am loving the Red Rising series. I’m pre-grieving my reading and finishing of the next and final book. But, I’m also so addicted that as soon as the library checks it out to me, I’m going to devour it. This is dystopian fiction at its finest: fully fleshed out, incredibly exciting, completely believable, deeply poetic. The protagonist, Darrow has my heart. He’s driven, he’s thoughtful, he’s pure but emotional, and he’s young and beautiful. The villains of the […]

Everything old is new again, and I want to inhale it all

July 5, 2016 by borisanne 2 Comments

This is the first time since The Passage that my brain has DEMANDED MORE when I’ve gotten to the end of a Book 1. I want, I want, I want. I freaking fracking loved Red Rising, and it was a huge surprise to me, because as per uzh, I had totally forgotten what the book was about by the time it was checked out to me, making it a totally shocking, harsh deep dive into an incredibly complete and consuming future dystopia. There’s a lot […]
