“Honey girl, I don’t care what you do, as long as you’re kind to everyone you meet.”

Saga, Volume 9 by Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples

June 30, 2019 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

I’ve been putting off reading the latest volume of Saga since I had heard it was devastating and that there would be at least a year hiatus until Vaughan and Staples picked back up working on this. Why sit with whatever terrible, soul crushing experience was waiting for me for over a year when I could just live with not knowing for the same amount of time? Well, I abandoned that perfectly solid plan and gave in to temptation. It was just sitting there in […]

I Did It

December 16, 2018 by Ellesfena 19 Comments

I really can’t believe I’m reviewing my 52nd book of 2018, because I never thought I’d get here. 2018 was a slog, y’all. The funny thing is, I thought it was because I hadn’t read that many great books this year, but that wasn’t true at all–I could barely find a one least favorite for the CBR wrapup post because I had enjoyed almost everything I read. I just couldn’t get into writing the reviews this year. Luckily, I am extremely competitive with myself, and […]

Betrayal. Just, betrayal. That is the main feeling I have at this point. Well, the main feeling in like 75% of my brain. The other 25% understands logically why what happened in this book happened, but that 75%, it is PISSED. Just, how dare you. Maybe it is a good thing that Vaughan and Staples are taking a year-ish hiatus on this series, because my main impulse right now is to go over to their houses, knock all the books off their bookshelves in a […]

Well, thanks a lot for leaving me with further emotional scars for a whole year, Brian!

4.5 stars This is volume 9, it is NOT the place to start the series. Do, however, get to your nearest retailer of comics/graphic novels and buy volume 1, it’s pretty much the best thing out there right now. You won’t regret it. Normally, the volumes of Saga tend to vary between heavy and emotionally wrenching storylines, followed by something a bit more funny, light-hearted and uplifting. Vol 7 ended on a very sad note, and Vol 8 was an exploration of grief and loss and not […]

Star Wars for Adults

October 2, 2018 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR 10 Bingo: Banned book. The Saga comics have been banned in several states and continue to be one of the most challenged books in public libraries across the nation. I’m not a science fiction guy. I read a little science fiction and a little fantasy but my bailiwick is mystery. I don’t really like graphic novels either. That would make me an unlikely fan of the Saga series. But any time these books come out, they’re absolute must reads for me. The “Star […]

Saga: Volumes Five through Eight by Brian K. Vaughan (writer), Fiona Staples (artist)

August 31, 2018 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

I’ve finally finished the remaining available volumes of Saga. At the end of Four I was devastated, I both simultaneously wanted to start the next volume immediately and knew I wasn’t emotionally ready for it. Instead, I went on vacation, came back, and then slowly continued my journey through Hazel’s story. These books continue to be fantastic and I am in awe of what Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples partnership has managed to accomplish. *As a note, I am refusing to grade these against […]
