“You’ll never understand the way the worlds really work until you surround yourself with people from all sorts of weird backgrounds.”

Saga: Volume Four by Brian K. Vaughan (writer), Fiona Staples (artist)

The Saga re-read continues. I’m still in love with this series. It’s rare to have humor, sorrow, wit, action, adventure, and beautiful drawings married in one text, but this is that text. Volume Four would be my sole four star rated volume, but I am refusing to grade these against themselves, they are collectively some of the best storytelling I have read and will all be given five stars, regardless of swings in execution from volume to volume. That said, while I’m sure that the plot […]

Saga: Volumes Five through Eight by Brian K. Vaughan (writer), Fiona Staples (artist)

I’ve finally finished the remaining available volumes of Saga. At the end of Four I was devastated, I both simultaneously wanted to start the next volume immediately and knew I wasn’t emotionally ready for it. Instead, I went on vacation, came back, and then slowly continued my journey through Hazel’s story. These books continue to be fantastic and I am in awe of what Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples partnership has managed to accomplish. *As a note, I am refusing to grade these against […]

This ends well (J/k/, it’s Saga, you know it doesn’t).

How to write 250 words about Saga, Volume 5? I really struggle to sum up my thoughts on each volume, because I am possibly the worlds most ridiculous person when it comes to spoilers. I like to go into things like a newborn babe, with no knowledge or framing of the experience. So, what to say about this that doesn’t give anything away? Our main heroes (anti-heroes?) are still being chased, and still vacillating between making good and bad choices, with the dial swaying to […]

Just Rub Salt in the Wounds Next Time, Guys, It Would Hurt Less

If you thought Saga was a dark and heartbreaking comic before, you may just want to stop at Volume 4.  Usually, after finishing a volume of Saga, I like to leaf through the pages again and relive my favorite scenes.  This one left me needing a hug and kitten gifs. So, obligatory spoiler warning.  Seriously, there will be spoilers.  So don’t complain if something gets spoiled here. You would think, after the cliffhanger in the last volume, that the eventual reuniting of Marko and Alana […]

Epically epic epicness and more words that also mean epic.

Turns out I didn’t wait long enough to start this series. I have fast run out of Saga and that is a tragedy. When is the next book? Siiiiigh. (Reminder to self for next time starting a Brian K. Vaughan series: the “long enough” time to wait to start a series of his is “when it’s already finished”.) Slight spoilers to follow. More than any other book in this series so far, I feel like Volume 5 really hit home for me why this series […]

Interesting. I could not fathom writing about the same characters in the same way for that long.
