Talking Donuts Explode

The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman

January 17, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Dungeon Crawl Carl is still going pretty strong in book 4. Carl, along with Donut, and a few others are on floor 5, which seemingly requires a bit of teamwork or at least coordination between groups. It really takes a while for the story to get going, maybe a little too much time doing some scene setting that just doesn’t seem that necessary. The probably haunted buried temple thing likewise has some good potential that really doesn’t get developed. The flying gnomes and the camel […]

Sequel Bait

Vengeful by V.E. Schwab

July 21, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo Review 3 (Birthday- V.E. Schwab 7/7) I have to admit that I had a hard time getting myself to pick up Vengeful. I don’t pre-order often, but this I had, so it’s not like it hasn’t been physically on my TBR shelf since it came out. I’m pretty sure I was just worried I wasn’t going to like it as well as I had Vicious. I really only picked it up when I did because it fit a Bingo square that was going to […]

The Bad Kind of Glow in the Dark

The Radium Girls by Kate Moore

June 15, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve noticed a bit of an interesting trend for me: I’ve started getting a little more into non-fiction. Since I work with a good bit of that kind of thing professionally, I haven’t really done much for spare time reading. And yet here I am with what could be my third(ish) non-fiction review of the year. Unlike my luck with best-selling fiction (generally poor), I seem to have done better of late with the best-selling non-fiction. The Radium Girls is non-fiction, and the best kind, […]

Best Selling Bore

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John Le Carre

June 15, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I don’t have good luck with standard best sellers or literary fiction. I decided to try Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy because the premise sounded interesting and I hear the author do a radio interview for the latest installment in the series not too long ago. My first reaction to this novel was: “How could something this boring have possibly been a best-seller?” George Smiley spends a lot of time thinking about the past, doing paperwork, and talking to random acquaintances. He used to work for […]
