The Devil's Advisor by Brad Abdul

June 14, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

This book bills itself as “Horror Fiction” and “for fans of Good Omens“; and I think they were incredibly far off the mark on both counts. Other than it being set mostly in Hell I have no idea how it could be considered “Horror”, and the writing is in no way anywhere close to being even one-tenth as funny or well-written as Good Omens. Brian (the main character) is unlikable, or as unlikable as someone who has all the personality and character development cardboard can […]

What to read if you want an exhaustive look at the end of the Eisner era at Disney

DisneyWar by James B. Stewart

May 7, 2020 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago I went bouncing through Disney+ looking for a documentary to watch (as I’ve mentioned before, my brain is really happy with non-fiction right now) and came across The Imagineering Story which is six episodes telling the (slightly biased*) story of the creatives behind the physical creation of the theme parks, and its link to the animation and other departments throughout Disney. I have a special place in my heart for all things Disney, but the Imagineers might be my favorite group […]

The Bad Kind of Glow in the Dark

The Radium Girls by Kate Moore

June 15, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve noticed a bit of an interesting trend for me: I’ve started getting a little more into non-fiction. Since I work with a good bit of that kind of thing professionally, I haven’t really done much for spare time reading. And yet here I am with what could be my third(ish) non-fiction review of the year. Unlike my luck with best-selling fiction (generally poor), I seem to have done better of late with the best-selling non-fiction. The Radium Girls is non-fiction, and the best kind, […]

Time Salvager by Wesley Chu

March 2, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I only half read Time Salvager. I’m really stubborn and I absolutely hate to DNF but this book has been sitting on my coffee table and my Goodreads “Currently Reading” for three years. I wish that were an exaggeration. Even though my copy was signed by the author when I went to a reading when this first came out, it’s time. I should have liked this. The general premise and the opening scenes are really intriguing. Humanity can time travel but it’s really dangerous and […]
