“If you spy a naked man among the pines, you must run as if the Devil were after you.”

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter

Never have truer words been spoken! This collection of short stories crept around my periphery for some time, and I am both overjoyed to have finally given in to it and disappointed in myself for not biting earlier. I came across it originally on a list of fairy-tale retellings on Autostraddle, and when it popped up again in the employee recommendations section of one of my favorite booksellers (Crow Bookshop in Burlington, what’s up!) I knew that it was meant to be. Still, it sat […]

My Favorite Version of Beauty and the Beast Yet …

As Old as Time by Liz Braswell

December 21, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Given my love of reading, it always felt like I should like Belle and Beauty and the Beast much more than I did.  Maybe it was timing, since I saw it when I had started transitioning to life action mostly and didn’t want to watch kids’ stuff.  Maybe it’s simply that I hated the color yellow at that age.  Either way, it’s never been one of my favorite Disney stories or even fairy tales. However! I was surprised to find that I enjoyed this one […]

Good, but not great. Even with a hero modelled on David Bowie in Labyrinth

3.5 stars Liesl dreams of becoming a famous composer, but is left to write compositions for her talented younger brother to play instead. Her beautiful younger sister is set to be married to the most eligible young man in the village, while Liesl helps her long-suffering mother and bitter father run their inn, their days of musical success and glory behind them. I liked this??????

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas

January 9, 2019 by narfna 6 Comments

I was already poised to like this book, past feelings about Sarah J. Maas aside. It’s a Beauty and the Beast/Ballad of Tam Lin hybrid retelling, and unless you make some sort of grave mistake, you’ve already got the outline of the story ready to go (tried and true over hundreds of years and variations), and it’s pretty hard to mess that up. And she doesn’t! I thought the story worked well as a combo B&B/Tam-Lin/original elements mish-mash. The first half is mostly Beauty and the […]

I really enjoyed this. The Murderbot books are basically comfort reads at this point.
