The Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll

January 28, 2019 by baxlala 1 Comment

According to Goodreads, this is the second book I’ve read by Jessica Knoll. I have a vague memory of reading Luckiest Girl Alive, which Goodreads says I read in November of 2016. I trust Goodreads more than my own brain in this case, because I have very little memory of that book and I apparently didn’t review it. I gave it four stars, though, which is (at least) one more star than I’d give The Favorite Sister. I wouldn’t say I particularly enjoyed reading The […]

Vox by Christina Dalcher

January 9, 2019 by baxlala 1 Comment

Lately, I’ve been escaping into sci-fi, fantasy, and romance novels so often that I felt I needed a dose of reality. Vox might have been too much reality. Parts of it infuriated me so much that I had to put the book in the freezer down to allow my blood pressure to drop. So, not super relaxing, but it was good. Vox is told in the same vein as The Handmaid’s Tale, wherein our heroine is suffering through a grim dystopian future. Though there are […]

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren

January 7, 2019 by baxlala 1 Comment

This was the last book I read in 2018, after a week and a half of sloth and gluttony and travel and ZERO READING because it turns out if I exhaust all of my introverted tendencies with an overabundance of alcohol and sugar and family and friend time (which I love!) because we’re only home a few times a year so we have to SQUEEZE IT ALL IN, I have no brainpower left to read. It’s quite sad, really. I still feel a bit like […]

You Solo’ed Me?!

August 22, 2018 by baxlala 10 Comments

Do you ever finish a book and just KNOW you’re about to get thrown into a book rut? For me, it happens when I unexpectedly end up reading the perfect book at the perfect time. I rush to finish it, even though I fear nearing the end because it means it’ll all be over soon, and this world I’ve been living in, these characters I’ve become friends with, will soon be gone. As soon as I close the book, I wish I could start it […]

Nothing here is real, nothing here is right.

March 21, 2018 by baxlala 2 Comments

I’ve gotten to the point of CBR where I’ve got too many books banked, and I haven’t written any of the reviews for them, which means that by the time I get around to writing the review, I barely remember what the book is about. MUST BE MARCH. The Iron Fey is one of those YA series that I picked up because I ran across it on Goodreads, and it had goodish reviews, and I was bored, and MAGIC, but I’m not sure I’ll continue […]

I’m afraid that once your heart’s involved, it all comes out in moron.

I’m stuck between “I really liked this one but didn’t love it” and “I sort of loved it but didn’t LOVE LOVE it.” It’s very confusing. So I’m giving this a solid 3.5. Young Jane Young is told from the point of view of three strong female characters so PLUS right there. It has a bit of a Gilmore Girls vibe, as well, between Jane and her daughter, Ruby. It all starts, though, with a young woman named Aviva Grossman, who becomes embroiled in a […]
