The Seinfeld of Hipster Heroes

June 11, 2016 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Nothing substantial happens in volume two of the Batgirl reboot, and I didn’t mind at all. Barbara Gordon and her gang of friends are fun to hang out with, regardless of whether this particular collection has a overarching story thread or meaningful character development. As an economical comics fan, I generally prefer to buy books of short runs and defined arcs. But, Batgirl’s characters and art are too fun to ignore. This collection carries along the best aspects of volume one (https://cannonballread.com/2015/10/when-superheroes-use-tinder-for-good/) while toning down […]

Small Victories: At Least They Aren’t Wearing Heels Most of the Time

December 27, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

I started reading the Birds of Prey series back in CBRIV and then I learned that Gail Simone didn’t start off writing the series and what I thought was Birds of Prey Volume 1 was actually Volume 3.  And since I’m a completionist, I had to go back and get the real Volumes 1 and 2. And if Volume 1 is any indication, I can see why DC essentially rebooted the series with Volume 3 when Simone took over.  I knew Simone was heralded as […]

When Superheroes Use Tinder for Good!

October 10, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

It’s a good time for comics, especially for comics with younger protagonists. Marvel’s Ms. Marvel is a fun book, Morning Glories is Image’s hellish but entertaining read set in a prep school (I can speak to the first volumes), Gotham Academy is DC’s take on Harry Potter meeting The OC, and the Waid/Staples Archie reboot is my favorite comic in print. Then, there’s the recent Batgirl update. The new Stewart/Fletcher/Tarr team places Batgirl in college and in Burnside, which I think is Gotham’s Brooklyn. (By the way, comics with younger sidekicks have traditionally […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
