Small but mighty, a lot of heartache in a little book (Bingo – Friendship)

The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead

October 4, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This novel is based on the true story of a boy’s reform school in Florida where abuse and mistreatment were rampant. And if that’s not enough, it’s also about the implications of race in such an environment, and how one black young man (Elmwood) essentially is railroaded into this awful place by being in the wrong place at the right time. The 2020 Pulitzer winner is not messing around. At it’s core, it is the story of the friendship that blossoms between Elmwood and Turner, […]

Accessible, exciting historical fiction for the tween set

Lifeboat 12 by Susan Hood

January 24, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Almost accidentally, author Susan Hood stumbled upon a historical event that has gone mostly overlooked and it is the basis of her exciting middle grade novel Lifeboat 12.  The book is told in verse format by narrator and actual survivor Ken Sparks, who is thirteen years of age right before London is destroyed in the Blitz. Young & The Restless: Ratchet Edition

February 12, 2017 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

I don’t even know where to start with this review for The Heart Don’t Lie by Yasheca Lasha. This book made Young & the Restless seem downright innocent with all these love triangles.  I was kindly invited to join the Mocha Girls Read at The Ripped Bodice event with Beverly Jenkins last weekend. The founder of the book club did warn me this month’s book was campy. When the library didn’t have the book, I should I have known something was up. Luckily, I found it on […]

Two stars for the memoir. Five stars for the moth joke.

Norm Macdonald isn’t for everyone. His laconic speech, his super-dry delivery, and his constant exclamations of “holy crow” are very much of a love or hate variety. I happen to love Norm and was very much looking forward to reading his fake memoir. And I want to be able to tell you that I loved it. But I didn’t. And I’m sad about it. Bunnybean gave this book to Mr Scoots for Christmas and he loved it. HE LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH. We heard […]
