Banned in China doesn’t mean what people think it does.

Marrying Buddha by Wei Hui

January 18, 2026 by matt_thac Leave a Comment

The Community Bookshelf inspired me to reflect on books I’d read around the times I was living in a place. A bit of Googling, which wasn’t really a verb when I read Shanghai Baby, I came across this sequel. Marrying Buddha continues the story of Coco in (probably) largely fictional auto-biographical tale of her bouncing once again between 2 lovers, her Japanese boyfriend Muju, and a “George Clooney lookalike” Nick. I’d almost forgotten how much of a sex symbol George was in the late ’00s. […]

I’m always down for a twist on the Hades/Persephone story…

Hot As Hades by Alisha Rai

“Where the hell am I?” What an actress. Since he was half-enjoying the novelty of this playacting, he replied. “Yes.” “What?” “You’re in Hell. The Underworld, love. To be more specific, you’re currently in the throne room of the palace of the almighty and great ruler of said Underworld.” She swallowed, and didn’t that just conjure up all sorts of dirty thoughts? “Which would make you…?” He bowed his head in greeting. “Hades. I know you’re wildly pleased to make my acquaintance.” __________________________________________________ Persephone was […]

Definitely not a romance story

The Siren by Tiffany Reisz

February 3, 2021 by kimberleybear Leave a Comment

[Read in ebook from public library] Content warnings ahoy. Hachi machi, y’all, this book gave me the sads. Not because it’s a bad book — this is a well-written book with interesting characters that I kept coming back to because I wanted to see what happened. But to call this a “challenging read” would be to gloss over about ten content warnings, some of which I didn’t even remotely expect. I picked this book up because The Rose, by the same author, is just a […]

Young & The Restless: Ratchet Edition

February 12, 2017 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

I don’t even know where to start with this review for The Heart Don’t Lie by Yasheca Lasha. This book made Young & the Restless seem downright innocent with all these love triangles.  I was kindly invited to join the Mocha Girls Read at The Ripped Bodice event with Beverly Jenkins last weekend. The founder of the book club did warn me this month’s book was campy. When the library didn’t have the book, I should I have known something was up. Luckily, I found it on […]
