Rare and sweet as cherry wine by perchancetosleep

December 9, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

“I can’t do this without him,” Ronan admits, his voice as rough and as hoarse as rusted nails. “I can’t lose him, too.” They don’t speak after that. Ronan breathes until it doesn’t hurt his lungs anymore, until he can’t feel new wetness sliding down his face, pooling underneath his chin. The ground is as cold and hard as ever. It will still be there when Ronan returns. And Adam will still be alive. If Ronan gives up hope, there’s no one left. Adam has […]

The Roots that Clutch by TheCryingClub

December 4, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

The Roots that Clutch ― TheCryingClub (A Normal People AU) I’ve taken a liking to Hozier’s music lately and I can trace the origin back to when I read this fic for the first time. I think what keeps pulling me back to it, and what resonated with me in Normal People, is the feeling of bittersweetness that lingers, mellowing from a sharp pain to a dull throb. It’s this gorgeous aching that pulls my mind back to this story again and again. The title […]

Competent, Readable Science Fiction

Darwinia by Robert Charles Wilson

February 12, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

Robert Charles Wilson writes enjoyable, twisty sc-fi and Darwinia fits into his usual pattern of work. It’s a straight forward book that I know I’ve read before, but I had no memory of any of the twists or the plot. I guess that’s part of my general sense of okayness with the book — it’s not groundbreaking or revelatory, but it is competent and fun, and not everything is going to be Ursula K LeGuin. You’ll probably like it but won’t remember it in a year. I […]

I didn’t think I liked romance novels

Dress Up In You by MsKingBean89

January 11, 2022 by ElCicco 4 Comments

The last book I reviewed for CBR13 was a work of Harry Potter fanfic called All the Young Dudes (ATYD). I had submitted my “best/worst of CBR13” list before finishing ATYD, which is a shame because if I had waited, All the Young Dudes would have absolutely been one of my best of the year. I loved MsKingBean89’s imaginative, romantic and tragic story of Remus Lupin and his relationship with Sirius Black, and during the holidays I went back in to AO3 to see if […]

There was no other way I could go with the Self Care BINGO square than by reviewing a fanfic. #CBRBINGO – Self Care

Dan Westchester, Hello Kitty Enthusiast by violue

August 4, 2021 by narfna 15 Comments

Link to the story on AO3: Dan Westchester, Hello Kitty Enthusiast Firstly, if you are not familiar with fanfic (which I hope is not many of you, because it is a true pleasure to indulge in) many fics have individual titles but are part of a series that also has a title. I’ve used the series title for this one, Dan Westchester, Hello Kitty Enthusiast, because it makes me laugh, and because I honestly think it’s a better title than part one of the fic, […]

I liked this more on re-read in some ways, and a lot less in others.

Marvel 1602 by Neil Gaiman

September 1, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

The first time I read this I wasn’t very well-versed in comics, in the Marvel universe in particular, or in Gaiman’s work. There was barely an MCU in 2011. The First Avenger would be released three months later. 1602 was an okay read for me at the time, but I remembered almost nothing about it before picking it up again. I definitely liked it more this time, and got more out of it, but there was some stuff that was sort of perplexing and things […]
