I’m on board until someone mentions Zubaz pants.

In a vacuum, I think this book gets four stars. In a vacuum, I think the general opinion for the book is that it’s an engaging story with fairly likable characters that pays homage to numerous classic and iconic science fiction stories from past decades: from Ender’s Game to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In a vacuum. But this book doesn’t exist in a vacuum. In the rich and dense atmosphere of Earth, this is the much anticipated follow-up to Ready Player One, which […]

By the Numbers (or I miss Tony and Tia)

March 9, 2015 by Jenny S 2 Comments

About six weeks ago, I caught the tail end of the movie version of I am Number Four on TNT or USA or one of those other cable networks. I had seen it before and found it a mindless way to spend 90 minutes, but not particularly great. (Though Timothy Olyphant is always appreciated.)  The movie ends with a set-up for future movies and this made me wonder about the book—whether there was more to the story and whether the book had done it better. […]

Alien invasion love

December 23, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Collision is part one of a new alien invasion trilogy from Berinn Rae. Sienna, an ex- military brat and recent widow stumbles upon a crashed ship near her remote home. Against her better judgement, she goes inside to investigate. She discovers a super hot human-like man (except for his unnatural golden skin) unconscious on floor. Another weird guy passed out who may be dead. She drags the golden man outside just before a crazy winged alien attacks. The two creatures point weird guns at each other with […]

Our own worst enemy

October 27, 2014 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

SPOILERS for previous books in the Expanse series! Goodreads summary: “The gates have opened the way to thousands of habitable planets, and the land rush has begun. Settlers stream out from humanity’s home planets in a vast, poorly controlled flood, landing on a new world. Among them, the Rocinante, haunted by the vast, posthuman network of the protomolecule as they investigate what destroyed the great intergalactic society that built the gates and the protomolecule. But Holden and his crew must also contend with the growing […]

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel exactly the same

February 2, 2014 by Vylotte Leave a Comment

What is identity? What makes you a person? What makes you you? There are two stories that start the novel, first that of Ian, a stereotypical emo 20-something. He’s trying to find his place in the world but mostly wandering through the same patterns day after day. Until he realizes that it really is the same day, over and over, and he’s stuck in a dome that is protecting Seattle from … something. The second story is of Kylie, survivor of the apocalypse and life […]
