I am not a quick reader, but I blazed through Becky Albertalli’s Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda in one sitting. I haven’t seen the movie yet and didn’t know much about the book before I saw it while browsing bookstores on a recent trip, but I’m really glad I read it. The story begins as teenage Simon is blackmailed by a fellow student who inadvertently read Simon’s email exchange with another boy Simon knows only as Blue. They’re both closeted and want to keep […]

As a Professional Crush-Having-But-Doing-Nothing Kind of Person, I Feel You, Girl…
After having read Becky Albertalli’s novel Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda earlier this year (which I LOVED also with the super sweet film adaptation Love, Simon which left my heart full of warm fuzzies), I decided to pick up this companion novel, The Upside of Unrequited. And boy, I must say, that just like in my previous Albertalli read, she sure has a knack for personally calling me out through these relatable characters, feelings, and emotions: I swear, a lot of the lines she […]
I Can Pretend All I Want to be Cynical, My Heart Still Melts Time and Time Again
I’ve definitely seen Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda reviewed a number of times by Cannonballers in the past few years, and was always interested to read it but for some reason never did. Enter my best friend who surprised me with an early birthday present of some books, with this among them. And immediately after receiving it we went to a movie and what do we see? A preview for the upcoming movie adaptation called Love, Simon. Talk about coincidence, especially since I was […]
Very cute YA coming of age.
Becky Albertalli is officially not a one-hit wonder. I feel I also must note that if this book had been around when I was a teenager, I would have been 1000% obsessed with it. Like Molly, I was that girl with the hundred unrequited crushes and no idea what to do about them, and even though her body-image issues were not mine, I felt I could also relate that she had them. (Adolescence is a terrible time. I’m sure you all agree.) And just like […]
May stat round-up!
I’ve tallied the yearly totals for most users going back to CBR3, and (assuming their review counts are accurate), there are more than 20,134 reviews since 2011. The database currently has over 14,000 reviews, so I’m about 73% of the way complete. That makes me feel better. On with the stats! May stats: 280 reviews (May 2016 saw 275 reviews) Average rating: 3.64 stars (May: 3.69) Most popular book: Life Moves Pretty Fast (Hadley Freeman) and The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli (4 reviews, 2.75 and […]
A kissing book & some young adult fiction
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne 3 stars I don’t normally read romances, with the exception of my beloved Outlanders, but y’all recommended Kulti and I really liked that, so I thought I’d give this other highly rated one a shot. I didn’t love it, but it was cute. I listened to the audio version, and hearing the name “Joshua Templeton” repeated over and over varied from obnoxious to over the top hysterical, depending on my mood. I liked Lucy, but I have trouble getting behind the whole “I’ve loved you all along which […]
