“In most cases learning something essential in life requires physical pain.”

July 23, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Since it’s my Year of Murakami, I’m reading both the man’s fiction and his non-fiction. A decade or so ago, Murakami wrote a book about running. Unbeknownst to me, when not listening to jazz records or drinking whisky or thinking about women just out of reach, the author runs marathons. In fact, he runs one a year or so, and also likes triathlons. This book isn’t really a how-to or a straight memoir so much as a man recording his wandering thoughts. For a fan […]

Neymar: A Soccer Dream Come True

June 4, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Born in Brazil, Neymar da Silva Santos Joenior grew up imagining what it would be like to be a soccer player. As many kids who are fans of a sport, he would become the announcer, star and every player on the team as he played in his grandfather’s house. And like many kids he has the dream of making it big someday. Unlike many, however, he did make his dream come true. More of a 4.5 as I would have liked to have seen more […]

Chad, you magnificent son of a bitch

May 27, 2018 by octothorp Leave a Comment

My question to the bookseller when I saw this remaindered was “is this about baseball? Because I don’t care about baseball.” I’ve tried, my dad was a longtime Tigers fan (don’t worry, he’s fine, I used the past tense because all Detroit fans see reason eventually) and I’ve been a good sport and attended many a ball game in my day.  I never saw the point until I reached drinking age, and then realized the quantity of beer required to make a bunch of guys […]

That’s Better!

May 16, 2018 by Lisa Bee 2 Comments

After being disappointed by the hockey-themed romance Slammed by Victoria Denault, fellow Cannonballer, Emmalita, had some recommendations for me to check out! And this novel Game Play (first in a series called “Power Play” by Lynda Aicher) was definitely an improvement, and I liked the relationship in this one a lot more. But I was still very frustrated by a lot of aspects: the lack of communicating their feelings clearly and talking about things! Is this a common romance trope? Just talk to one another! […]

Hockey? Good! Romance? Good! This Novel? Mmmm, Not For Me

May 10, 2018 by Lisa Bee 2 Comments

A part of the “San Francisco Thunder” series by Victoria Denault, I admit I picked this one up because the title made me chuckle. I’m not usually one to read novels in this kind of romance genre (even though I’m a total romantic sap, so it’s surprising that I haven’t delved into this much before!) so the problem with my doing a review is that I don’t per say have a baseline for what to expect or what is good and/or different in the genre. […]

Athletes Can Be Activists, Too

April 20, 2018 by ASKReviews 1 Comment

Best for: Anyone interested in a compelling story about how a professional athlete lives his values. In a nutshell: Former (sniff) Seattle Seahawk and current Philadelphia Eagle team member Michael Bennett shares his prospective on a wide range of topics, including the NCAA, the NFL, racism, and sexism. Lines that sticks with me: “They also tell us to stick to sports when we speak out on issues. But they don’t seem to have a problem when we’re making commercials, selling their kids sneakers they can’t […]
