Probably don’t get this book in place of a Valentine: This is not the kind of Heart Shaped Box your sweetie wants

February 1, 2014 by NTE 2 Comments

(Unless your sweetie is, like me, a fan of creepy books.  In that case, this might suit her/him better than the box of candy you had planned on.) Is it a sin to treat people as if they are disposable?  If you don’t think so at the beginning of this creeper of a novel, I guarantee that you will by the end.  (You will also probably believe in ghosts.) (And never lock your dogs out of the room ever again.) The main character of Heart […]

If You’re Between the Ages of 5 and 500 You Will Love Zita the Spacegirl

February 1, 2014 by Alexis Leave a Comment

Zita the Spacegirl and Legends of Zita may look like books for children and they are (my 4 and 7 year old adore them). But don’t be fooled, they are great books for everybody. I was so excited when Legends of Zita showed up in the mail that I hid it from my kids so I could read it without waiting for them to finish it first. That is either testament to what a horrible parent I am, or to how excellent these books are. […]

The Happiest Dog in Town

February 1, 2014 by abby awesomeness 6 Comments

Because of Winn-Dixie is an amazing book about a girl named Opal who moves to Florida with her father and finds a dog in a supermarket. She names him after the store and claims he is hers. She immediately falls in love with him because of his toothy grin and his fun-loving nature. She brings him home and introduces him to the preacher, her father. His father is unsure about Winn-Dixie at first but Opal talks him into keeping him. He has bald spots, smells […]

Hurts So Good

January 31, 2014 by Another Kate 5 Comments

Grace Burrowes, bless her heart, makes us wait…and wait…and wait until these sad, stubborn survivors find their way to their Happily Ever After. And the wait is absolutely excruciating…but worth it. If you like Burrowes’ work in general and/or Scotland in particular, or if you just need a good wallow, you will not want to miss this book. Just be sure you have a box of tissues or three on hand. Full review is up at Heroes and Heartbreakers.

On Betrayal, Whimsical AIs, and Special Circumstances

January 31, 2014 by Incandenza Leave a Comment

I’ve been reading science fiction since I knew how to read. I’ve immersed myself in utopias, dystopias, parallel universes, and alien mating rituals. I’ve stood on the shores of an inland sea on Mars, plunged into the swirling depths of gas giants, and hacked the operating system of reality. And after thirty years in this genre, I’ve come to one conclusion: I want to live in the Culture. Fuck the Foundation, fuck the Metaverse, fuck Mars, fuck the Federation, and certainly fuck the Sprawl. The […]
