MelBivDevoe’s CBR review #13
I discovered Rainbow Rowell’s novels earlier this year, thanks to many recommendations from several friends. Her latest, “Landline,” differs from her most recent novels in that it’s not YA. Of all her novels, this one feels the most grown-up to me; it’s also the most supernatural or science fiction-ish. Georgie McCool is a successful television writer who has two young daughters with her stay-at-home husband Neal. Georgie and Neal have been together since college, but their marriage has become strained as Georgie’s career has taken […]
MelBivDevoe’s CBR review #12
This is going to be a short little review – I finished this book over a month ago and simply haven’t had the time to write a review. Forgive me if I mix up any of the details – like I said, it’s been a while since I read it! I was going to describe the character of the title, Bernadette, as an agoraphobe, but that’s not quite right. She’s not afraid of leaving the house or of other people – she simply loathes them. […]
I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself
I’ve tagged “The Leftovers” as science fiction, although I’m not sure it was intended as such. The book opens with a great conceit: Over 2% of the Earth’s population has disappeared. Just poof, gone! Some think it was the Rapture; most are simply stunned and confused by what has happened. The novel focuses on the residents of a quaint suburbia called Mapleton and how they attempt to move on several years after the great exodus. I absolutely loved the premise. What would you do if […]
We’re Built to Deal
(Disclosure: I won a copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway.) Marc Maron is one of those comedians whose work I’m familiar with but haven’t experienced for myself. I know he has a show on IFC called “Maron” that I’ve heard is similar to Louis CK’s “Louie,” but I’ve yet to watch it. I also know he’s the host of a very popular podcast called “WTF” that I’ve seen quoted on in various places online, but I’ve yet to actually hear it. So when […]
A Long Time Ago… Oh, You Know the Rest
Chances are, if you’re reading this, you’re a fan of the Veronica Mars tv show (and most likely the movie as well), so I’m not going to reintroduce all the characters or delve into any history here. This novel picks up right after the events of the movie, with Veronica leaving her life in NY behind to take her rightful place behind the desk at Mars Investigations while Keith recovers from his injuries. Just as she’s pondering how she’ll pay her new assistant, Mac, a […]
