I’ve had a troubled relationship with George R.R. Martin’s Saga of Fire and Ice. It’s been two years since I read the entire extant series over the summer. I hated the way he treated the characters, (read, Red Wedding) but wanted to continue the plot lines of some of my favorite characters. So what to do with the encyclopedia that was just released this year? Well I was curious. And it didn’t kill the cat. The World of Fire & Ice by GRR Martin, Elio […]
A very satisfying sequel to a book I really love
Disclaimer! St. Martin’s Press gave me an ARC of this through NetGalley in return for a fair and honest review. Ten years have passed since the events of Garden Spells. Claire Waverly has put her catering business on hold and branched out with boiled candy. The lemon verbena can soothe any throat or heartache, the rose candies can make you recall lost love and the lavender makes you calm and happy. After a feature article in a high-profile magazine made demand for her candy explode, […]
A Blazing World of Feminism, Art, and Masks
My friend M has been at me to read Siri Hustvedt’s The Blazing World for a few months. She even texted me at 8 am on a Sunday morning, “You really need to read this book. The fact that I am texting you this early is a sign.” I had read The Summer without Men two years ago and loved it, so I was willing to be indulgent. Boy, I am so glad I finally cracked it open. I devoured it in less than three […]
Adventure writ small
I received this book from my brother in law this past Christmas, as he knew I liked graphic novels and is always willing to take a stab in the dark. I had actually already seen this book, although not read, as my son had already borrowed it from the library. He had been trying to get me to read it, and we ran out of time, so was very happy to have it cross my lap again. The Mouse Guard is a unit of mice […]
Two Novels, One Book
I have never read a book like this before. There might be others like this, that combine two separate novels into one very large book, but none that have crossed my path. This book was ambitious, long, and ultimately successful. I’ve read Westerfeld’s Uglies series, and the first in theLeviathans, so I was hoping I would enjoy this story of an author and the book she writes, and boy did I.
Desolation! Pink dragonflies flitting above the graves.
YOLT is the 12th of Ian Fleming’s James Bond series. It is the final book of the Blofeld trilogy. Ian Fleming’s James Bond series is available to borrow for free for Kindle owners with Amazon Prime. Since I enjoy free things and the James Bonding podcast, I’ve been slowly reading through the series for a year or so. It is difficult to discuss the Bond books without talking about the movies or the author, Ian Fleming because they are all interrelated. To avoid those discussions, any […]
