Can't Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne

February 9, 2023 by Kit Moonstar 1 Comment

One’s the most powerful mage in the world.  The other is personal bodyguard to the queen.  And really all the two of them want to is run off and open a store that sells books and serves tea.  That’s easier said than done though. The characters are fantastic, all of them.  Reyna and Kianthe the main leads were a fantastic pair, and the supporting cast is just as good.  There are a lot of found family vibes that I really enjoy, and the way that […]

On the Line: a Story of Class, Solidarity, and Two Women’s Epic Fight to Build a Union by Daisy Pitkin

February 7, 2023 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I had some unexpected travel last week and grabbed the nearest library book to read on the plane. On the Line: a Story of Class, Solidarity, and Two Women’s Epic Fight to Build a Union had come to my attention due to a pro-union cat on twitter (@jortsthecat – which if you haven’t encountered, I promise he and Jean are worth taking a quick deep dive). I don’t know if it was the time/place I was reading it, or my affection for the recommending source […]

White Evangelical Racism: The Politics of Morality in America by Anthea Butler

February 6, 2023 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

“White Evangelical Racism tells a concise history of the evangelical movement and–here is the hard part–the racist and racial elements that imbue its beliefs, practices, and social and practical activism.” I first learned of this book and its author from watching the Jerry Falwell Jr documentary on Hulu. Butler is one of the featured commentators, and in the early parts of this book, she spends some time framing her relationship to the material which comes in part from her professional and educational expertise, but also […]

Everybody and Every Body Outdoors: Disabled Hiker’s Guide to WA and Oregon

Disabled Hiker's Guide to Western Washington and Oregon: Outdoor Adventures Accessible by Car, Wheelchair, and on Foot by Syren Nagakyrie

February 5, 2023 by Flimflamingo 2 Comments

I don’t live in the Pacific Northwest. I have been heard regularly saying, “Oh that sounds nice but, correct me if I’m wrong, sounds like that’s an OUTSIDE thing” when someone’s brought up the outdoors and why I have to just have to go hiking someplace or to see some lake or even just go… there. However, for some reasons I won’t disclose (because work) and some others I will disclose in a sec I came across Syren Nagakyrie’s Instagram account @disabledhikers which led me to their website which led me […]

The Racism of People Who Love You: Essays on Mixed Race Belonging by Samira K. Mehta

February 5, 2023 by elisamaza76 Leave a Comment

Book: 5 starsAudiobook narration: 5 stars The Racism of People Who Love You is a very good book, and you should read it. In seven thoughtful, compelling, and sometimes (frequently) devastating essays, author Samira Mehta examines the broad concept of what she refers to as “mixedness” through the lens of her particular lived experience as the daughter of a South Asian immigrant father and a white American mother. The essays are about her and her family and about race, culture, and belonging both within and beyond her family. […]

I was right to kidnap this book.

Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson

February 3, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit 3 Comments

I kidnapped this book.  I’ve read previous Stevenson books, and enjoyed them, and though I purchased it for my sister for Christmas, when the time came I found myself unable to wrap it or hand it over.  Instead, I did what any sensible sister would do in these circumstances. I had Mr GirlWhoGotOverIt tie the book up in light rope, took a polaroid of it, and, like Tom Hanks in The Burbs (but with more nefarious purpose), wrote a note reading “[Walter]: I have your […]

Glad to see someone else is meh on this book. Really bored me.
