My first CBR was 2021. It was COVID and I was reading and determined to do something with the time. Two years now and I'm in a very different situation all the way around. My goal for this year is to write more reviews of how a piece of reading made me actually think and feel, not just a recap.

The series ended with the softest and boringest of whimpers

Grace Under Fire by Julie Garwood

March 22, 2023 by MegsDarcy 1 Comment

Oh nostalgia, you fickle fickle tricky beast. I read Julie Garwood because my mom read Julie Garwood. When I was a pre-teen and desperately needed something new to read that wasn’t a kids book nor school book I found on one of my mom’s numerous book cases called Saving Grace. It was about an abused woman who has to escape to the highlands of Scotland and marry a stranger to be safe and survive. It was a historical romance and what I liked most was […]

The madness of Florida and TFG and snakes

Squeeze Me by Carl Hiassen

March 8, 2023 by MegsDarcy Leave a Comment

I don’t know how to describe how much I enjoyed this book. I listened to it as a book on tape for a long drive between the mountains and it hit the spot in a way I didn’t know I needed. It is a very long book that probably could have been smaller, but the author had a story to tell that encompassed the last year and bit of TFG’s reign of horror and after he lost. There were many times in the book when […]

Love to Loathe this set of novellas

Loathe to Love You by Ali Hazelwood

February 23, 2023 by MegsDarcy 2 Comments

I haven’t been able to ‘get’ into any big books lately. My mind has been constantly bombarded by family drama, work drama, and society drama. Every time I’ve tried to sink into a nice big book and get lost I’ve had to set it down and it feels like weeks later before I can pick it up again. But I was flying and at the airport early and wanted something to read that wasn’t attached to a screen. Enter this enchanting little anthology. Three novellas […]

Alan Rickman: a bit catty, a bit snobby, and maybe a bit dirty?

Madly, Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman by Alan Rickman (Author) Rima Horton (Afterword), Emma Thompson (Contributor)

February 2, 2023 by MegsDarcy 1 Comment

Do you have ‘Bathroom books’ or know what they are? For me, a bathroom book is a book you can take up or put down easily and not worry too much about losing your place. This book is the absolute perfect bathroom book. In fact, I would argue it is best read in small chunks a year at a time. It is not the type of book you savour, but it will probably encourage you to go out and get a diary (as I did […]

A kids book written for youth marketed to adults

Beezley and the Witch: Selected Spells by Willow Mason

November 2, 2021 by MegsDarcy 2 Comments

An interesting premise: Check! A good heroine and interesting secondary characters: check! A location that makes me want to visit: check A fully-fledged idea that is well executed: eh…. check? I have no idea how to write this article without sounding like an ungrateful wretch. I got 3 books for less than the price of one by a special promotion online. All of the books kept me engaged and interested in their stories, there was nothing glaringly bad in the writing, and yet… Beezley and […]

How to solve mysteries and alienate coleagues

The Coroner by Matthew Hall

September 7, 2021 by MegsDarcy 1 Comment

I listened to this on the very long trip from Vancouver to Edmonton. And it was in some ways the perfect roundtrip book. It was engaging, excellently written dialogue, a complex and interesting protagonist, a case that was interesting, and not too much fluff to distract from the main story. Jenny Cooper was a barrister (lawyer) in the UK until her husband suddenly filed for divorce and she started having severe and debilitating panic attacks. Looking for a fresh start she gets the job as […]
