Tiny Bean is Keen

Tiny Bean's Big Adventures V01 by Stephanie Graegin

Ten tiny stories about a tiny character called Bean are collected in Tiny Bean’s Big Adventures V01. It is currently available but read via an online reader copy. The author Stephanie Graegin made a sweet collection of life events for the younger to almost 10 aged reader. The older toddler will love being read to, while the aged 7 or 8 will enjoy their first “big kid” reading chance. Overall, things are just cute. Cute characters, cute stories, cute illustrations. There is some humor that […]

“It was like drinking the feeling of being peaceful.”

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree

Bingo: I am counting this book for the “Work” category, since the plot centers around the main character’s business venture and place of work. Viv, an orc adventurer, is ready to hang up her sword and settle into a more peaceful life. She wants to start a coffeeshop in the magical city of Thune, spreading the joy of caffeine and baked goods to all species, races, and character classes (those are the correct DnD terms, right?) Viv is stubborn and independent, but quickly learns that if […]

I am Jack’s waste of paper

Jack Serpent by E. A. Field

CBR Bingo: Black I picked up Jack Serpent because I liked the cover (you can’t really tell from the photo, but it’s super shiny) and the synopsis (it sounded like a monster huntery Witcher-vibes type story). Despite nothing in the title, cover, or synopsis indicating that this was to be the case, this reads like a typical bad YA romantasy title. I don’t have anything against either of those things, and in fact, some of my favourite stories are YA and/or romantasy books, but this wasn’t […]

Stitch Head was the first creation. But not the last.

Stitch Head: The Graphic Novel by Guy Bass and Pete Williamson

Cbr17bingo Favorite (in a favorite genre) Stitch Head: The Graphic Novel by Guy Bass and Pete Williamson is a cute retelling of the Frankenstein monster story with modern twists. Plus it includes the ideas of friendship and how they change and grow. While I am not in the BEST EVER category for this title, there was a coziness to it that I enjoyed, plus the humor was quirky and not too young or “stereotypical” (though there is some of that, too). Sometimes things are a […]

This cabinet is more than a family antique heirloom

The Cabinet by Jordan Hart, David Ebeltof, and Chiara Raimondi

Cbr17bingo FAMILY The Cabinet is one of those graphic novels/books where you will love it or hate it. The humor is offbeat, the characters are not always likable, but the adventures are strong. If Dr. Who meets Voyagers, with a hint of Stranger Things (or so I assume as I have not watched it), a little Buffy the Vampire Slayer, meets the wackiest D&D game (or Vox Machina) you have read that is set in the 1990s diverse cast series. Creators, Jordan Hart, David Ebeltof, […]

I almost used this for red, but things are not always greener (grass) on the other side of this friendship

The Slightly Spooky Tale of Fox and Mole by Cecilia Heikkila

by Leave a Comment

Cbr17bingo Green While the title of The Slightly Spooky Tale of Fox and Mole (as did promotional material) does say slightly spooky, I felt it was spooky and one should drop the slightly! However, it is not necessarily over the top so most ages at least five and up could read and the adult reader will understand the metaphor of friendship and selfishness, plus anger about being taken advantage of. Cecilia Heikkila’s clever text and illustrations make for loveable characters (even if Mole is a […]
