You’re no match for Matilda

January 12, 2014 by alannaofdoom 2 Comments

Hello all! I’m a Cannonball Read newbie and this is my inaugural review. I am absolutely thrilled to be here! Matilda was one of my very favorite books when I was in elementary school. As a smart little girl with a love of reading and my own particular and deep-seated sense of justice, I found it an immensely appealing fantasy. (Of course, I’m really nothing like Matilda: I enjoyed the attentions of loving parents, went to schools that challenged and supported me, and as far […]

My Head Exploded Multiple Times

January 12, 2014 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

In my quest to get caught up with the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series before season four of Game of Thrones starts (April 6 – mark your calendars!), I powered through book three in a little over a week. I’d enjoyed book one thoroughly, and liked book two, but book three? Holy direwolves, this book is amazing. For those of you who haven’t yet read the books, I’ll be sure to keep this review spoiler free. I found I enjoyed this book so […]

Review of Words and Stuff

January 10, 2014 by Marc 1 Comment

Some spoilers for Daughter of Smoke and Bone shall be included in this review, as this is the second book of a trilogy.  I know, I know: a young adult story split into three parts.  Who comes up with these nutty ideas? Nonetheless, in any three act story, you must spend the first act establishing your characters, their motivations, and set the wheels in motion for all that is to follow.  In the third act you (ideally) bring character arcs to a dramatically satisfying conclusion as well […]

Egg . . . because his bald head looks like an egg. Get it?

January 10, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

NOTE: The Hedge Knight was originally published in the Legends I anthology, edited by Robert Silverberg. As the stories/novellas in the collection are set in previously existing fictional universes, and I have only read two of the series in question, I am only reviewing Martin’s novella at this time. This was really fun and I’m kind of mad at myself as a Martin fan for not checking it out sooner. If you like A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones at all, you should […]
