A Title Both Literal and Not

The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water by Zen Cho

July 3, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I saw the author post something on social media before this was released about how some early readers didn’t think the novella had enough fighting to be wuxia. Zen Cho said that was because she meant for the novella to be a fan-fic of an imaginary 50 episode tv series of that genre. I don’t really know much about wuxia but I do think that The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water has the flavor of it at least. The general premise is […]

A Sherlock Holmes Retelling That Actually Works!

The Angel of the Crows by Katherine Addison

July 1, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Katherine Addison might just have made my auto-pre-order list. I loved The Goblin Emperor, and she did it again with her most recent book which is effectively Sherlock Holmes fan-fiction. The cool thing about The Angel of the Crows is how it sets things up to be kind of recognizable but then drops a detail or line that makes it really clear which story you’re in and puts things recently mentioned in new and often interesting perspectives. The world of the story is a Victorian […]

More Magic A Little Austen and A Few Surprises

The True Queen by Zen Cho

May 10, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve had The True Queen sitting on my shelf a while; long enough that I remember the general plot and characters of the first novel in the series (A Sorcerer to the Crown) which ended up being a little bit of a problem when I didn’t quite remember who certain characters were at first or how they were meant to relate to each other. The first novel is Jane Austen-esque, and this one keeps the general vibe, but the story this time is all new; […]

Didn’t know it, but I needed a romance with a geeky, anxious lead that I relate to.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

May 6, 2020 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

When I received Fangirl in the 2019 Cannonball book exchange, the first thing I noticed about the cover of my edition (the one pictured in this review) was that the art was done by Noelle Stevenson.  I adore Stevenson’s graphic novel Nimona and seeing her art on the book gave me a warm glow before even cracking the cover.  This was in addition to the good will Rowell built up with Eleanor and Park, and Pumpkinheads, but it was low on the TBR so it […]

It ends at the beginning but doesn’t add up

Season of Storms: A Novel of the Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski

April 13, 2020 by ElCicco 2 Comments

This final Witcher novel was written over 10 years after The Lady of the Lake, the finale of the Witcher series, apparently because the Witcher video games had taken off and Sapkowski figured he could milk that cash cow one more time. Season of Storms is actually set before the rest of the series, which fits in with Sapkowski’s predilection for out of whack time lines. I can’t say that it really adds much to the series overall. There’s plenty of violence, treachery and gore, […]

Just a bunch of novel-length Sherlock fanfiction I read this year by Various

December 30, 2017 by narfna 21 Comments

So first off, let me just say that I feel weird about this, so if you feel weird about this, then I’m right there with you. I went back and forth (and back and forth) over whether to post this, but in the end, I spent a SIGNIFICANT amount of time this year reading (and re-reading, and re-reading) Sherlock fanfiction. This year has honestly been pretty terrible for me personally, and among other things, I have developed pretty severe anxiety. I’ve never had to deal […]
