This review will be the definition of spoiler free, come see us June 1 to talk details. I am, as they say, perplexed by this book. It was like a roller coaster ride. At the beginning, I felt like this: There was a great wide world of story ahead and it was all for me. Historians! In the near future! Using the scientific method and time travel! But then, I spent a lot of time waiting for thins to start happening. And that was not […]
Dysfunction Junction
My book club’s current choice is The Nest, an engrossing read about the very dysfunctional Plumb family. I read that the author expanded this to a novel after starting in her MFA course with a short story about 4 siblings having a drink at 4 different bars in NYC before joining for a family meeting. Leo, the selfish and manipulative brother of Beatrice, Melody, and Jack has found himself financially and personally ruined after an accident involving a young waitress. In order to keep the […]
Discussion Topics: Cannonball Reads Science Fiction
Friends, Book Lovers, Cannonballers, lend me your eyeballs! It is time to post the preview for our discussion topics for Doomsday Book. As some of you may know I have not yet finished myself (80% and counting!), but with so much happening on the page there is plenty to talk about even before I reach the end. Some of you have already posted glowing reviews of Connie Willis’ book, and those of you that are finishing up should feel free to review before our discussion if […]

Our intrepid historian, Ned, accidentally travels back to the Middle Ages for a short time and witnesses a scene that is repeated in the book in three different historical moments – a woman is asking a man why he hasn’t done a thing she asked him to do and the man is making excuses. Ned cannot understand the words the woman and man are speaking, because English […]
I still wouldn’t have married him, but I get it.
I’m not the first person to look at this quiet, thoughtful, former librarian wind up with George W. Bush of all people. American Wife closely mirrors the events of the former first lady’s life from childhood until her husband’s second term in office. Most of her decisions in adulthood, revolve around a tragic accident during her teen years, in which a boy she was enamored with was killed. I have to say I often found this book uncomfortable to read. Mainly because I found […]

From the first twenty-four hours of the vote this book has been in the lead, but books two and three; Lagoon by Nnedi Okarafor and The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin gave chase. I’m adding all three to my to read list, and hope that if your choice wasn’t our final choice, that you’ll make the time to […]
