Book Club Reads Science Fiction – voting for June

April 11, 2016 by faintingviolet 7 Comments

(Note: Voting is closed, and Doomsday Book by Connie Willis is the selection. Join us on June 1 to discuss this book about time travel. — MsWas)   Hello Everyone! After a slightly bumpy start this spring, we are at it again with another Cannonball Book Club vote. Our summer Cannonball Book Club Reads selection will be Science Fiction. Since part of the raison d’etre for this book club is to highlight various genres and hopefully get ‘ballers to read new things, we’ll tackle Science Fiction […]

Expect. Don’t Accept.

April 9, 2016 by maydays Leave a Comment

This is my book club read for the month.  It was an inspiring, if not entirely engrossing read.  The memoir covers Daugherty’s experiences as a father to Jillian, his second child, who has Down syndrome.  The diagnosis is a surprise to Daugherty and his wife Kerry, but they become loving, attentive, and tireless advocates for their loving, attentive, and tireless daughter. Early on in the book, Daugherty reveals the mantras that he and his wife developed in the hospital that carry them through in their parenting […]

Memoir. Fashion. Not for me.

March 4, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This was the March pick of my book club and I went into it with much trepidation.  I don’t read a lot of memoirs, and I don’t care about fashion sooo take what I say with those grains of salt.  I did NOT like this book.  Here is the paragraph that I have selected to illustrate the reasons I didn’t like it. “Despite all the drama, the photograph he took of Tina lounging on the sofa surrounded by parasols was not modern at all. He […]

Cannonball Book Club Discussion Post: The Bollywood Bride

March 1, 2016 by faintingviolet 36 Comments

We have reached the fateful day – it’s time to talk about The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev. Its perhaps an open secret around these parts that we haven’t found too much to love about this book. So, let’s dig in and talk about the whys and how’s with this book, and some larger thematic conversations as well. Let’s start with a few ground rules: Since we’re anticipating lots of conversation, please try your best to reply directly to each other, that way they are […]

Stumbling towards completion

March 1, 2016 by ingres77 9 Comments

I’ve never read a romance novel. I’ve never even come close to reading one. But, oddly enough, the book that has had the most lasting impact on me was Crime and Punishment, and not for it’s explorations of nihilistic degeneration and the Westernization of Russia, but for the deeply compassionate love between it’s protagonist, Raskolnikov, and Sonya. More than anything, the redemption he receives through their love is what touched my soul, and its gift to me was a feeling that I have long sought […]

A romance with all my least favorite tropes

February 27, 2016 by Beth Ellen 1 Comment

Oh, CBR BookClub. I’m so excited for you to exist, but this was definitely not my choice to introduce folks to the romance genre. About two thirds of my reading every year is romance. I know what I like within the genre and this one hit upon so many of the things I can’t stand. So as you all know from reading this one yourselves this is the story of Ria and Vikram. They were once young lovers, but haven’t seen each other in 10 […]
